Q9550 - 43deg idle in CoreTemp, 17deg in ASUS AI?

What to believe?

I have a lapped Thermalright Ultra-120 stuck on the chip, with a 120mm Scythe fan. The case (Lian Li PC-7) is air-cooled to hell (nor not really, as hell is a hot place).

I've felt the base of the cooler whilst running, and it is cold to the touch. I do not see how the cores can be 40deg+ idle.

I used to run a lapped Q6600 G0, and Coretemp would report that idles at around 23degrees. I don't see why a lower voltage, smaller process chip would idle at double this temperature in the same kit.

(Mobo: ASUS P5Q-E).

Cheers

Firstly are you running a recent BIOS, and are you running the latest version of Core Temp?

Wrong CPU freq is probably down to Speedstep.

Are the temps even across all 4 cores?

You were right about Speedstep - coretemp is just slow to update it seems.

Temps are pretty uniform for an Intel quad. Maybe try reseating the cooler. How much thermal paste did you use?

That doesn't seem right considering my Q6600 at 3GHz idles at this, only with a Freezer 7 Pro.

Well, on my Asus P5Q Deluxe I have idle temps of my Q9550 around 50c per core, although core two sits at around 10c lower at idle for some reason.

Thats with a zalman 9700 as well. It does seem odd that it's not that much different from the stock cooler at idle. Highest core temp is 69c when running prime for a while.

I've disabled the speedstep stuff too. Its running at 3.4Ghz at 1.22v (VID is supposedly 1.235 on this chip). Using core temp 0.99.3 as well.

May try flashing to a later version of the bios, and reseating my cooler.

That isn't too bad depending on how hot your room is then those temps are fine, it's still well within safe limits. You could try reseating the heatsink to try and get the temps even.

My Q9450 @ 3GHz idles at 39 degrees, load at about 56. The idle temps range from 39 on core 0 descending to about 29 on core 3 according to real temp, load are a lot closer together. I've re-seated the Freezer 7 Pro, and correctly applied AS5 as per the Arctic Silver guide for quad core...

Is it worth re-seating again, or is this OK? Is there a better CPU cooler that fits the P5Q Deluxe and (preferably) does not require the mobo to be removed?

Temps look fine. If the load temps are under 65 and stable then your perfectly fine and no need to worry about idle IMO.

Cool () - nice to know all is OK. Never known a chip to have such a game reading temps as these 45nm Intels!
