Keeping my eye on Q9550 prices so I get can one to drop into an mATX board, but prices are still hard to swallow at the mo, and the waiting is doing my head in!

Forgetting differences in RAM and board prices it just goes to shows what a bargain the i7 920 is.....

Yeah, the i7 bundles are a pretty good deal when you factor all that in. The motheboards are still pretty pricey.

Why would it drop further? It's one of the top C2Q's and was £260 only a few months ago. If you look above the older Q6700 is only £30-40 less and that isn't likely to drop much either. If you want one just buy it, I did when they hit £170.

I was hoping what with pressure of current i7's, and incoming i5's and i9's, the price may drop.

But g*d dammit, Ive caved into pressure, gone and ordered!

:)

170 is a good buy and they are selling pretty well. I only seeing them selling at that price until there phased out completely.

i would love to see what those 6 core i7s can do in benchmarks, however i think there gonna be overkill for gaming and probably harder to get good clocks.

Yeah but that's the original chip, not a new E0 stepping. Uses a little more power, and won't clock as well. For the extra £20 I'd defo get the Q9550 and benefit from the extra 200Mhz or so and the later core revision.

I won't be going I5 (imo) there would be no point and AMD II will perfer just as well consdering how close they are to 920 ATM

I have a q9550 and was going to upgrade to a i7 system when the new DX11 video cards are out. But i'm wondering, should i keep the 9550 for another year?

They are great chips and overclock well. But they are hot in comparison, are missing some instruction sets and have a lot less cache.
I guess so, but it may work out cheaper to get a q6600 until the q9550 price comes down a little? Is it hot tho, especially when clocked...

My Q6600 was hotter than my Q9550 and was a surprising performance drop.
+ the only place i can see a Q6600 lists it at £145 - didnt look particularly hard.

I would. There isn't much in it between a Q9550 and i7, I'd wait until a better i5/i7/i9 is on the scene personally.

Just buy a Q9450 for £150 and clock up to 3GHz! thats what i did! these chips are awesome, i even managed to drop the voltage so it's doing 3GHz on 1v!
