q9550/q9650

I am just in the process of selling my E8400 on that auction site with a view to upgrading to the Q9550. Just because I fancy the change and it's about as good as I am going to get on socket 775. I don't expect to see that much difference, the extra two cores will speed up the occasional bit of encoding I do I suppose but it's more to make me a little more future proof..

Main difference, is that with air Q9550 will probably max out at around 3.8GHz and Q9650 will clock a little over 4GHz, of course you do get some good and bad CPU's as always so results may vary. ;)

I ended up with

i7 920@4GHz

Notice a patern? lol

Also agree with Greebo, I've gone from Q6600 to Q9550 to i7 920 and with all of overclocked to simalar levels you won't notice much difference between them for general use or games, if you run benchmarks you will pickup on the differences but thats about it to be honest.

We need faster graphics cards right now, not CPU's imo. :)

Tbh mate im running a q9550 at 3.8ghz on air on very little over stock volts of 1.200, my temps max at 56c on the highest core under load, 4ghz on a q9550 with good temps is easily achieved as long as you have good air cooling.

+1 Megahalems keeps mine very cool - granted its only a 15% overclock.

Im using a TRUE black mate for cooling, heard good things about the megahelems, btw very good oc with a quad on an nvidia sli board, i had the 680i and it wouldnt go over 3ghz on my old q6600, i really miss the 680i as it was such an easy board to oc on, particularly with a dual core, plus i really enjoyed experimenting with different graphics cards in sli.:)

1.1875 VID?
Sean your a jammy git lol, thats a nice vid, gotta admit though any of theese EO stepping q9550/q9650 are awesome cpu's, mine is going soon as im upgrading to i7, though i may have a crack at hitting 4ghz out of this quad before i sell it on.

Cheers mate. Did have it at 3.6Ghz on stock CPU volts (nb upped a bit) but it was just overkill, nothing put a dent in it so Ive turned it down for now. Made it harder for myself by using 4x1GB's too, didnt really intend to overclock when i bought it.

Well I was asking your chip's VID, your are right though :p Actually have 3x Q9650's all with decent VID; 1.1875, 1.6250, and 1.1000! Im in the process of testing each and keeping best for myself, others will be used within some 775 units upgraded in return beer tokens + £'s etc ;) Q9650 will be last 775 for me before moving on, although I don't intend to change over to I5/I7 tech untill summer 2010.

L846B*** is the batch for the 1.1000v, other two are from the newer L847C***.

Even better as your running 4x1gb, i had a few issues with my E6600 at 3.7ghz with 4x1gb on my 680i

Yep mate my q9550 is a 1.200 vid which i think is sort of middle of the road, i had thought about the q9650 but it was to many pounds (less beer tokens) i had been running a q6600 at 3.8ghz on air but i got bored with it and fancied a new cpu to tweak, after selling the 6600 for £100.00 (lapped chip to) i opted for the 9550, got it for £170.00, so basically £70.00 for a new cpu, mine is a batch no L844C01. Im in the middle of upgrading to i7, but i dont want to get rid of this current rig just yet, im ordering the asus p6t v2, thankfully back in stock along with the i7 920 do and 6 gb of ocz reaper.

With my 2nd rig, I sold an E8400 and bought a Q9550 (E0), certainly runs a lot cooler than the C1 I had, 4.0GHz of an o/c with 1.264v, idle 36c-41c, load 56c-59c using a Tuniq Tower 120mm, was going for i7 920 for main rig, but have now decided to go for i7 860 with P55.

4GHz on P5Q dlx should be simple enough + good to know come CPU sales pitch. :) I7/I5 kit is so tempting, plenty of bills to pay back end of this year so I must resist the urge to get the card out.

Doing anything special to that Q9650 to get it to 4.6Ghz?

I'm tempted to get a cooler running Q9650 and retire my Q6600 to another machine.

Just a good mobo which will do 500+ fsb which in my case is the Gigabyte EP45 UD3P. Everything else was easy. The q9650 booted at stock volts at 4Ghz and 4.2Ghz at only 1.25v. 4.6Ghz took a bit more but still under the max.

Aye with the q9550 on the p5q dlx, gtl setings seem to be the tricky point once you go above 450 fsb, gtl setings are something im still trying to get my head round.

Ive read some good stuff about the ud3p greebo, apparently it allows a wee bit higher clocking with quads than the p5q's, and its a bit easier to use bios wise, ive sen the p5q deluxe do 500fsb, think it was cob and w3bbo who posted early settings with q6600's and q9450, the q9650 sounds like an awesome cpu, pity i couldnt afford one at the time, hence i got the q9550, which is still a pretty good chip, 4ghz at stock volts on any chip is very impressive:)

It's an ace mobo for the q9xxx cpus. I didn't need to muck around with gtl refs until I got to around 4.5Ghz.

It will even boot and run benchmarks at 4.9Ghz (9 x 545) but not stable for 24/7 use. I could have it running at 4.7 to 4.8Ghz but the core voltage is over 1.4v for that and although the temps are fine (watercooled) I am conscious about ruining my cpu in the long run.

Anyway, 4.6Ghz will do me for quite sometime before the itch to upgrade to 6 core i7 gets to me. I can't see any point in going to a 4Ghz i7 atm as little or no gain.

The only thing lacking is the ability to have SLI but if ATI get their new cards right, I may be tempted to have a pair of them in xfire.;)

I'm curious to know, would be so kind as to share VID + Batch info? :) I've read that with quality cooling these Quad's tend to be FSB/Mobo limited before anything else, which seems to back up results for me. Overall the 1.1875 chip the best one so far, and not the very low VID 1.1000.

Haven't got batch info, sorry. VID is 1.2375 so certainly not one of the best.

As stated it will do 4Ghz at stock volts which is amazing tbh.

I would agree that the limit appears to be mobo. I had an Asus maximus formula (x38) and the cpu wouldn't do more than 440 fsb. The p45 board opened up 500+ fsb.

Handy to know, thanks. :)

I'm hitting FSB wall of 467 with the P35 P5K Dlx and 448 with a spare MSi Neo2-FR. So might get my hands on a high end P45 just to see how far these Q9650's will stretch on air.

A little wisdom needed, I have q9550, it wont go above 3.4 stable with prime. After about 3-5 mins the 2nd core just fails, then I get another core fail, whilst the other 2 cores still go on working. Any advise would be greatful.

If that RAM is 4x2GB sticks then there is more strain on the north bridge so the volts to that may need upping a bit. It may also be that the your pushing the RAM too far if you havent set it to unlinked or changed the divider down.

Hi, I keep the ram set to either 800 or less, didnt want to overclock the ram until the cpu stable, thx. I might try taking 4 gb ram out. tbh nothing ever uses that much anyway, its overkill.
