Right then ive just installed this cpu this morning into my xfx 780i board and Im wondering what sort of overclock is possible, ive read that 3.8 is achievable but with my limited knowledge of overclocking I doubt I could get this high. I would be happy with 3.6. Can anybody advise what settings and numbers and voltages you are using to get a stable 3.6 oc on this chip. I know all boards and cpu's are different so im going to be using these figures as a bench mark. All help is appreciated.

3.8 should be do-able. I got 3.6 out of my old Q9450 with my first attempt at an overclock.

How did you OC your QX6700?

If you're looking for someone elses bios setings that you can just copy & write into your bios then just google it. You'll probably find a few different ones. If your new to overclocking these may do you for now but uyou'd be better off reading a guide & understanding what all the figures are that you are entering.

Whats the VID on it? use coretemp to find out.

I got mine at 3.825gig on an EVGA 750i board and 4gig is stable just pushing the voltages more than I'd like.

Depending on the VID and the CPU quality you should manage atleast 3.4-3.6gig on stock voltage... aslong as the motherboard can do 400+ FSB no hassle.

Bare in mind my board has bad vdroop and drop and a high VID 1.2625 or something... I only had to push the vcore up about 0.085 or something and increase the FSB/VTT about the same to get 3.825 stable, northbridge up +0.1, everything else on stock and GTLREF stuff on auto... I decided in the end to take the extra hit on the FSB/VTT rather than spend hours hand tweaking the GTLREF every time to save 0.005 volts.

Get a copy of CoreTemp and it will tell you the VID at the bottom of the processor information panel... this is the rated voltage for stock speed - the lower this is the higher chance you have of getting a high overclock... tho theres no guarantees.

Ah right. Nice one. Cheers buddy. I use coretemp anyways so I will post the "VID" in a minute or so, what would be a good vid on a Q9550??

Well I have it at 3.6 now with no tweaking whatsoever on voltages or anything like that and im running 450 x 8 to get this so im more than happy. Time to sell the old faithfull QX6700!!

This Q9550 is ideling at 34 degrees and after running prime albeit for only 15 minutes its sitting at 45 degrees. Its running under a corsairH50 with arctic cooling mx3 paste are these temps good???

You will have to mess around with the GTL Vref settings, to get it stable with a low CPU voltage.

My Q6700 on a XFX 780i was:

CPU Core: 1.39375
CPU FSB: 1.3 (keep this as low as you can)
Memory: Manufacturers recommendation only
SPP: 1.4
MCP: 1.525
SPP<->MCp: 1.525
GTL VRef
0: 90
1: 50
2: 90
3: 50

That got me to 3.6 GHz @1440 FSB

Ive managed 3.7Ghz on mine without much fiddling, if i go for 3.8Ghz it fails in Prime, im maxed out on my fsb and NB voltage so this may be holding me back.

4Ghz was my aim and i think its easily possible with the right board, i don't think you'd see the difference but you've got to try for it.

If you can keep below 75c when stress testing youll be grand, the max reccomended vcore for a 24/7 overclock on air on 45nm quads is 1.4v. I think anything above 3.6ghz wont show drastic differences in games, mainly in benchmarks. Nice clock btw on a 780i board.:)

Cheers Setter to be honest to get it to where it is now wasnt to hard in all honesty. I was a bit worried because ive read a lot of posts saying nvidia boards dont like 45nm quads but so far so good!! Ive ran intel burn test a few times to and im not getting massive temps there either around 50 degrees so im happy. Im not going to bother clocking it any higher because it does its job for me. Back on the intel burn test piece how many loops should you usually set it going for ive been doing 5 but not sure if its enough? Ive ran it on prime to and it dosnt flash any warnings but the max I did it was for an hour. I have to say that I can see a massive improvement with this chip over my old qx6700, things just seem to be smoother.

Quick question for you here setter, like I said im new to this overclocking lark and at the moment my pc is running nice and fast but ive been reading another thread on here about ram timing and ratios being 1:1. Currently mine is 11:13 on 531mhz. Is this ok? Like I said earlier it passes IBT and prime
