Your setup is fine especially since your cpu is overclocked. Q9550 is still a powerful cpu and won't bottleneck your potential 6950

Same here pretty much (Q9650) only changed because the upgrade didn't cost me much as those chips still sell for quite a bit. I'd suggest trying to upgrade to 8GB RAM if you can though as some games are starting to see a benefit from 8GB.
Q9550 still runs very sweet , especially with your o/c , the 6950 would compliment it quite nicely , i agree with Redmint though , a wee ram upgrade to 8gb along with the new gfx card would be a great addition , especially with RAM not costing the earth anymore.
I have a ddr2 board though, i currently have 4gb of corsair dominator 1066 dual channel kit and i cannot find any of it online and the prices for other ddr2 ram is shocking compared to the cheap ddr3, so im completely stuck on what to do, can i mix similar ram with the same voltage and timings 
That's what I did, sold my 4GB kit & bought 8GB for only £15 more, even DDR3 isn't that cheap
