Qantas extra security checks....check-in online denied.

Shared name probably, my brother in law was dragged out of a rental car on the USA/Canada border and subjected to a very long and invasive interview because he shared a name with someone on their most wanted list. They never even appologised lol either just kicked him out into the waiting area where my sister and kids were waiting.

I got frisked and full bag searched on the ferry from Liverpool to the Isle of Man FGS...... The guy clearly didn't like the look of me / how I was dressed. I didn't see a single other passenger be searched.

Random security searches at the airport exist, I fall fowl of them regularly. Security is a pain but it's part of reality so not much you can do about it.

As for check in, I'm not sure, seems bizarre but probably not unreasonable given the levels of security with air travel these days.

I'm sure the scanners at the airport are sometimes set to flag everyone up to try and avoid looking selective. Last time I flew to the US the scanners showed red for absolutely everyone that walked through them while I was there. There was no way I had anything metal on me and I was wearing the same comfy "flight gear" on the way back and didn't get flagged up at all!

Spent 3 years traveling and had this on a regular basis. White late 20s. They have to hit quotas for all ethnic groups and make it look like they're not just targeting only a particular race or ethnicity.

Just enjoy the extra attention u get and chat to the people doing the checks, they're always friendly and just doing their jobs. Also most of the screenings are selected by a computer not a person. And the full body scans are good fun

All Australian airports now have increased security checks due to a terrorist alert a couple of weeks back. Seems that they were going to set off some gas on a plane smuggled in a meat grinder in their hand luggage. Last week, everyone was having to get swabbed for explosives.
I seriously think that airports need to look closer at the technology that they are using to screen people. It wont be too far off before luggage is not allowed and you can only board with certified clothing. Terrorists are always looking at new ways to cause mayhem. So many things still allowed that could be used if they put their mind to it.

Australian airports already have interesting restrictions, too. I know it's important to preserve the country's balanced biodiversity but it doesn't make it any less hilarious to see people fined for not declaring a crisp. Or a bit of wood.

Well they have stuffed up enough times with introduced species such as Rabbits and Cane Toads. I can understand that they would want that to happen again with some random beetle or wasp. When i moved over here i dont think they checked any of my stuff. We set out a pile of items not to be packed in the UK, but the removal guys packed them anyway. Its funny watching the Border Security programs and seeing the Chinese visitors trying to bring it all sorts of weird and wonderful fungus

Alternatively...

Did he spend a lot of time checking the groin area? ;)
