Hi guys,

I'm wanting an all-in-one NAS solution and am torn between these 2. I think the QNAP has the edge in that it supports DLNA streaming as well as UPnP but other than that I can't tell much difference.

Can anyone recommend either of these 2 and for what reasons? Thanks for the responses in advance.

I'd go syno but thats me (i have a ds106j), the support for products after being supersceded seems to be superior to QNAP.

QNAP does look better though :)

what's a slimserver? I want to use it primarily for an independent storage solution that can stream media around the house. It's just a real pain to turn my computer on everytime I want to access MP3s and pictures etc!

It's a host application for a audio media streamer (squeezebox)
DNS-323 supports UPNP media streaming (see sig) although I don't have anything to test it with (squeezebox doesn't support upnp media streaming, unfortuantly)

Unless there's a app that can test my NAS UPNP feature?

I think people have had problems with the Qnap, something to do with insufficient CPU horsepower for certain audio formats (you can install slimserver on this) afaik you can also install slimserver on the DS-207 as well.

Ah right. So you're saying that the Synology solution is the more powerful of the 2 in terms of processing power? I'm not sure what you mean about not having enough processing power for certain audio formats though.

Just had a reply from QNAP regarding MySQL support. Apparently the DS-201 CAN support MySQL via a telnet firmware update?

I've also been told that there is a DS-209 being released in August which will natively support MySQL & SQL Lite. This appears to be able to support up to 1Tb disks too (2Tb total space available with 2 disks) so may be worth waiting for?

If QNAPs support is anything like as good as their customer services response time (less than 24 hours) then I'll plump for the DS-209 when it's released. Hope this helps anyone thinking about getting one!
