I've been looking at the above NAS units recently as a possible solution to replace my large, noisy linux server. A couple of these with RAID1 500GB drives in one and RAID1 1TB drives in the other would probably easily cope with my needs. Does anyone know though if they are compatible with Samsung HD501LJ 500GB disks or have any thoughts on them?

I have several of those 500GB disks which I could use with the NAS Unit and thus not need to buy more disks. This disk model isn't listed on the QNAP compatibility page as being compatible but I get the impression that that is due to it not being tested rather than there being a specific issue.

Also any recommendations for 1TB disks to use with them, I would use Samsung F1's but I've read that there can be issues with bad blocks on them?

Cheers

I would go with the WD green power 1TB drives (£85!), as they are meant to run much cooler due to their varing spindle speed. Could you not just replace your fans on your linux server?

Fan noise isn't the issue, (it's running Noctua 120mm fans which are pretty quiet), the issues is that is running 6x 500GB drives and a 160GB drive and the noise and vibration from those appears to be the issue.

Going to a couple of smaller NAS's and some external backup drives seems to be the way to go at the moment.
