Hi guys.

Looking for a bit of help whilst i wait for QNAP to respond to their ticket.

I tried to 'expand' my volume today and it failed, unfortunately knocking my drive status to unmounted. Im currently using Raid 5 (don't know if thats of any use).

Has anyone had this problem before? Don't want to loose the data on the drives.

Thanks.

Really risky to grow an array without taking a complete backup beforehand.

Were you using RAID5 before you attempted to grow the array?

This may help, if you're able to connect the original drives to a PC. You'll need to use a Linux live CD.

Be very careful with the commands. Please ask if you're not certain.

+1 to above.

Why didn't you have a backup?

Before doing a task like this you should have at least have a backup, also use a UPS with the NAS.

May seem excessive, but if you value your data, it's worth it.

Hi guys,

Luckily this is on a nas which doesn't have critical data on. Funnily enough i use this as my off-host backup storage. So if i don't get the data back i will just lost a months worth of backups. Sucks but i've learnt from messing around too much. I agree though, idiot move.

Kia, i was using Raid 5 before i tried to grow the array. I thought the QNAP would do everything for me. I didn't expect it to fail mind :(

Just to update you guys.

Qnap rep managed to get my raid back mounted, whoo. Apparently this is due to a bug being in firmware 4.1.1 which i was using. Now using 4.2.0.

Basically it will unmount the raid so i can pop out the drive to exchange for a larger HDD but it doesn't re-attach if it fails.

So i am now in the process of copying the files via RSYNC and to one of my spare drives before i try this again. Guess i will try the expand again once i know i have it backed up. Quick question though since i messed up following google.

Currently i have 4x 2TB drives. I am wanting to put 4x 4TB drives in, so do i expand the capacity first and hope it doesn't fail or shall i power down, put one drive in at a time and get it to rebuild? Worried its going to fail again and have to contact QNAP again or something.

Thanks.
