QR Codes

I was in Japan a couple of months back, and everywhere I went were these things called 'QR Codes'.

They are much like barcodes, but are a 2-dimensional bitmap that holds encoded information that is designed to be read with a reader such as a mobile phone's camera. Uses for the codes are for holding text messages, urls, or phone numbers.

Now, I've only seen them in Japan, and had forgotten about them until I stumbled upon one online, and then I downloaded the reader software for my phone, and I've been playing with a QR Code generator online to make different things.

I was wondering, has anyone seen them kicking out and about in this country?

I've seen these used on boarding passes printed off the net :) Had one the other week for a British Airways flight.

Dont Royal Mail use these for prepaid special delivery? Last time I used the Paypal postage pre-payment service it had a code very much like that printed on it.

yeah, noticed a "barcode reader" on my n80 downloads page that's supposed to be able to read images like that! never quite managed to get it to work and gave up a few minutes later :)

I've been to raves where you buy the ticket online and they text you with a message containing one of those things, and then they scan it on your phone when you go to get in...

Isn't there some of these dotted around Edinburgh? I seem to remember seeing a leaflet about how you use your camera phone to capture the mosaic and it SMS's detailed of what you're looking at.

The only Q-codes I know are the ones used for radio communications.

QTH - Location
QRM - Man made interference
QSO - Contact

etc etc

Here's where i've seen them:

I've seen these before, on something I've bought but for the life of me cannot remember where! Good idea there.

edit - post above me makes me think that's exactly where I've seen them :p
