Quad 2.66ghz vs. p4 HT 4ghz

Hello to all,
currently i have a 3.6ghz prescott processor (LGA775) with HT overclocked mildly (n00by asus presets) to 4ghz, making it quite quick,

i'm goin to buy a qx6700 for my latest upgrade and just had a terrible thought last night... how well does it compare (being at a lower clock speed) when doing everyday tasks like installing things? moving files? opening programs? do all 4 cores work 2gether all the time?

so main question is will it be faster than my current p4?

(you can assume also that i will be overclocking mildly to about 3.2 possibly 3.4ghz?

An AMD X2 5000+ would be faster than your P4. On that note, the Quad 2.66Ghz will eat it for breakfast, then spit it out, then eat it some more.

My dual core Pentium-D at 3.9Ghz was comparable to an AMD X2 4600/4800+, just to put it into perspective.

yeah its a full build im putting together
(i missed out in the conroes last time i upgraded by about a week)
(and ddr2 the time before that) so im no stranger to having to buy completely new lol

Thing that makes me ask is i have a dual core laptop thats got a t2050 (or something similar) centrino duo (or whatever with out looking) and its soooooooooo slow to do anything
just wanna make sure that the cores outweight the speed!

thanks again

Probably something else wrong with the laptop. Slow HDD, not as much RAM etc.

The cores and speed will give a really nice boost. Even a Core 2 Duo (dual core) at 1.83Ghz will be neck and neck with your P4 in most things (especially games).

I went from a P4.

TBH apps are way faster, particularly 3D and video editing, but you knew that already.

'day-to-day' stuff, well yeah it will make you smile! Just seeing the quaddie rip through archiving and unpacking files is great, the difference in speed is huge, 'specially if you really do faff about doing tons of things at once.

Moving files around on disk? not seen much difference, don't do that as much I guess.

the c2d's are so much more efficient than the old p4's...the ghz speed really means nothing.

At the moment, no. In 95% of programs, you won't have a "4 cpu computer" but 2 cores will be working together in more apps. Bear in mind, in the future there will be a lot more things optimised for 4 cores though :).

clock speed doesn't mean anything. Just one 2.6ghz core would beat your 3.6ghz prescott.

A little off topic, but on the theme of quad cores, theoretically speaking, would:

Core 2 Duo @ 3.6Ghz 4mb = Core 2 Quadro @ 1.8Ghz 4mb ??

Seeing as a quadro is essentially 2 duo's "stuck" together (not native), and the potential "low-end" 1.86 Q6300(?) would probably have 4mb cache...

..So if both have the same cache, would 2 C2D cores @ 3.6 = 4 cores @ 1.8?

HyBrId

At stock, the Dual core E6700 would beat a 4Ghz P4 in most benchys by a considerable margin. Core 2's architecture is so much better than P4.

The Quad will offer similar performance in most tests, but naturally be better in very heavy multi-tasking environments due to the extra 2 cores, and also be better at tasks like video encoding where the software is written to make use of multi cores anyway.

Either way Core 2 makes P4 look like a very slow out of date processor. I went from a 3.4Ghz P4, to a 2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo, and the difference is like night and day.

I have a quad and its no comparison to my old P4, the performance is great especially for video editing!

Its a beast! (Not literally :D )

Shame on you for even asking!!
