Quad core upgrade?

Had 3 models of c2d then went to quad core (e6300, e6400, e5200) - (q9450). Wouldnt go back to dual core unless it was a laptop now.

Had a q6600 at 3.8ghz, sold it in mm and bought a q9550 EO, had 3.825ghz from it on slightly over stock volts, some said it was a bit of a crazy upgrade, but it ran so much cooler, used a bit less power, and gave me a performance increase in a few apps, id also always wanted to try a 45nm quad, kinda wish id kept it now as a second rig.

I am sure I read that AMD 640 was not all that great due to no L3 Cache or something? I am sure it was in Custom PC that they found an overlocked E5200 was faster at video encoding and gaming than the X4 620 with the lack of L3 cache making it slower with every day tasks. I thnk they concluded it suited to a budget workstation?

I am also wonderering what quad cores you go for if you are after low power consumption? Intel are doing 65w quads, will they revise the i5 and i7 platforms to such too?

Sadly I agree with the 775 quads being way too overpriced, £250 is a lot.

They are a bit pricey... but personally I'd say unless you are doing a lot of media encoding or something that can make use of more than 4 threads effectively like map compiling, folding, etc. then a Q9x50 with a good overclock will easily see you through the next generation of CPUs without a massive disturbance to the rest of your setup if your already running a 775 setup...

I upgraded from a e2140 dual core to a q6700. Pretty big jump in performance tbh. Think I'll stick to this, because I really cant understand the need for a better processor right now. No games that I can think of even push a q6700. The graphics card seems to be a far more important upgrade in my opinion.

Are you sure? . . . are you really really sure! :D

I like CPC, although their tech level isn't as good as these forums! :)

The people that need proper, serious, multitasking and multiple cores and have proper money should be looking only at a Intel® Core™ i5/i7 system

AMD just can't compete with this atm and anyone that chucks top dollar at an AMD quad core will be getting quite poor value money . . .

Intel® Core™2 Quad is dead dead dead, if you can pick up a sensibly priced used Kentsfield/Yorkfield then fair enough but Intel® Core™ i5/i7 has killed LGA775 quad stone cold dead!

Intel® Core™2 Duo still a nice option though, as is the AMD Athlon II . . .

What needs to happen is Intel® slashing the prices of their last gen tech, but they are being greedy so they won't, that's why AMD are gonna clean up on value sales because they offer a much better deal!

I disagree on Intel® Core™2 Quad being dead - overpriced - but except for a few niche uses my overclocked Q9550 is easily in the same ballpark as an overclocked i5/i7 setup - on overall benchmarks its just under 30% slower but thats pushed up by the few areas that the extra HT cores can be brought to bare effectively... by the time I need to upgrade again this round of CPUs will deff. be on the way out and at that rate intel and AMD are changing things up of late by that time I may need a new board or socket anyhow to properly use the then current round of CPUs even if I had bought into AM3+ or i7 now.

Saves reinstalling everything or spending out the extra money on a whole new setup... obviously if your buying new with no previous/recent platform to build on its another story.

I agree Big Wayne,

I only stuck with an old 775 set up, B grade mobo and E6300 to get me by until after Xmas, I would like to hope some better more efficient better OC'ing intel i5/i7 CPU's are round the corner.

You could be right about CPC, though they have nice glossy pictures it always seems to be after its been discussed here, they didn't seem to entertained with the Lynfield core due to the slight price difference with Bloomfield, and I myself wonder about teh different pricing.

I am quite tempted by the 860 though, but also wonder if the Q9650 or Q9550s were cheaper would it not make a superb all round media PC with my Gigabyte mobo, 65w for a quad sound good, but not at £245

I am just going to upgrade the 775 systems I have with better PSU's, drives and such, which should make the transition to a new platform simply a new mobo/CPU/ram.

Just one thing how can it be dead if its still selling well!

It's dead in the sense that it's been Outmoded by Intel® Core™ i5/i7

It's still a perfectly capable chip but it's waaay overpriced for what it is, All that needs to happen is for Intel® to slash the price of its entire LGA775 range.

There is really no excuse for paying a premium for an slower/inferior product! :D

Having said that auction is full of people paying really big bucks for five year old tech (i.e Socket A XP3200, Socket 939 Dual-Core etc) simple because they are either two lazy or lack the basic skill to swap out a board and re-install windows :o

Please stop recommending people buying a new LGA775 quad until Intel® get the message and slash their prices!

The Q9550 and the Q9650 will both hold their value rather well as they are near the top end of their socket.

I had the same thing with my Opteron 180, which I bought for £80, and then a year and a half later sold for £85.

ill admit The Q9550 and the Q9650 are really over priced but you can still get good quads for a fair price ! like my Q9400 only cost me £120 and then i sold my old cpu for £38 so really it only cost me £82 for a good quad

A fair price would be good, probably not gonna be new!

No no no! :p

It cost you £120, stop trying to pretend the money you got for your old processor wasn't money at all, sure it was money you already spent but once you sold it you turned your funds back into real money! ;)

Q9400 for £120 ouch!
