Quad Core....you what?

The DVD reader is an LG model and probably about 7-8 years old. Fortunately I don't use it too often so it's something I can live with, but trying to install some mobo software off it recently was an absolute pain in the chuff (pressing ctrl-shift-esc repeatedly and having task manager pop up after 5 minutes).

I've noticed that the HDD is churning quite a lot so I have a suspicion that it may be the AV software trying to do a check every time I boot up, or something equally resource intensive.

I'll do some more digging around; not really had much motivation to troubleshoot after the hassle of building it all. I'm new to Intel, new to CPUs with more than 1 core and new to Vista. I probably just need to do some tweaking.

Think you've identified the problem yourself, the answer is spend another 20 notes :)

indexing is useful, he shouldnt need to hide the sidebar and his harddrive should be able to deal with things like defender and anything else he runs, when many other peoples lesser rigs can do it just fine.
this suggests the problem is elsewhere, and i think stig is right, it sounds like the dvd drive and some 3rd party dodgy software. not vista or his harddrive.

I built a pc that ran a single core AMD Sempron LE-1620, cheap 2mb cache HDD, 1gb stick of ram and it ran Vista Premium + AVG pretty damn well! Not the quickest system around but at no point did it lock up or go slow. Friend is still more than happy with its performance!
