Hey

Some of you may remember that i built my new pc a few months ago... and yes it is awesome... i was recently thinking about getting the Q6600... i currently have a e6300 overclocked and a Noctua NH-U12F cooling it.... but i am worried... do i need a quad core... and also i hear that they get very hot... would my cooling be up to it ? i don't really wanna get water cooling (££££ !!)

any help... suggestions would be very helpful !

Thanks

weather or not you "need" a quad is totally up to you. find out what apps, games etc you want it for and base the decision on that.

your cooling will be up to it, but if you pc is doing everything you want it to now, there isn't really any point in getting a quad...

I've discussed this before, if you're going to be using it for games there's not really much point, games have only just been optimized for two cores, nevermind four.

Is your OC'd E6300 not fast enough? remember the Quad is only gonna be faster in apps which use all 4 cores so unless you specifically use apps which takes advantage of the Quad then no its worthit upgrading.

ok then... i'll leave it... after what you have said.. it does not seem like i really need one....

also i was wondering about a new hard drive... i was looking at the wd raptor...but again is that another waste of money ? also i wanted a lightscribe dvd drive... any thoughts on that ?

Thanks everyone ;)

Whether you need a quad or not is irrelevent - most here are enthusiasts and treat there pc's as a hobby. If you want a quad then I say go for it. If we lived by what we need then everyone would be living in a cave and feasting on boar.

sahjin sounds like you just want to spend your money, buy something like watercooling or a new sound card or something similar, If you dont want either of those the Quad Cores for me are extremely cheap for what they are and much better option than wasting it on buying a raptor which are a waste of money in my eyes.

actually the source engine is being update in oct and will effect all current source games. it wont really effect duels but anything more that 3 cores will benefit greatly. especially in future source based games. depends what you play though.

True, but an OC'd E6600 rips through all source games that are currently available. I dont think any of them are even close to needing a quad core yet. A 40% FPS increase at 100fps isnt going to affect anyone very much.

yeah... but seriously... i don't wanna waste £175... i know you will say it won't be a waste... but what difference would i see... i am web/graphic designer... so would it help there ?

To be fair, what dual-core system can't run Source games at full what anyway? I mean, obvious your GFX card matters, but it won't be the processor holding it back. Even the slowest C2D (and even my poor old 805 D) can run even DoD:Source, with all its motion blur and DoF trickery are full whack. They're going to have to bolt on some serious stuff to really challenge a modern PC.

well i got a my mates pc here

fx-55
7900gtx
2 gigs

32 man server constant 100fps. so i totallyagree

the upgrade of the source engine to multi core (not dual) is not about bringing out games with loads better graphics, more about better AI and physics stuff waaaaay beyond whats current.

Actually, that's a good point. The PhysX cards came about at the wrong time, as the extra 'spare' cores have made them somewhat obselete, as you can basically do everything you could with a physics card with a spare core. We may soon see full-scale, Soldner like destructable environments... but, hopefully, in a game that's not a pile of cack.
