I have 4 VMs on my comp usually run maybe 1 or 2 on top of the base o/s at a time, would a quad core be utilised if I upgraded from an e6600 ?

Yes a quad core CPU would help for running VMs. I quite often run a few VMs at a time and noticed a difference moving from my Core 2 Duo to my Core 2 Quad. I'm now on an i7 but haven't had much of a chance to fire up the VMs on it yet.

Yes, Virtual Machine. When running multiple VMs, the more CPU power there is, the better. Q9550 looks like a good bet :)

Interested in this thread since I went from a e8400 to a q9550 for virtual machines.

What program are you using? I prefer virtual box, which is not presently doing a very good job of multi-threading for all that it claims to do so. The problem is that virtualbox itself will use however many cores you have, but it tends to only let each guest access one of them. The move to quad core did mean I can now run 3 virtual machines very smoothly, and four if the host os isn't doing much. I like this.

Suns Virtual Box

Quad core turned up yesterday but i'm away till Friday so wont know the difference until then. Can't do a direct compare as the dual core has already been sold.
