NVIDIA® Quadro® FX 2500M with 512MB dedicated graphics memory.

Just about to order this on a laptop, does anybody know what the desktop equivolent is? (consumer wise i mean, i.e. is it a 6800ultra).

Im not really sure you can compare quadro graphics cards with gaming cards like 7800gtx go or 6800ultra. a quadro is not a gaming card. it has different drivers to make use of different things. quadro graphics are optimized for OpenGL graphic manipulation such as AutoCAD, 3D Rendering etc. they 'can' game but nothing compared to a deisgned gaming card.

what are your uses for the card? also bear in mind it has a power consumption of 100watts. I wouldnt like to be the battery.

I think it is based on the new range of GO 7900 cores so may be flashable to 7900gtx  . Not sure it's worth the premium though.

regardless your looking at over 6000 marks in 3dmark05.

Quadro is their workstation/professional line. They use essentially the same GPUs as consumer cards but have more features and use different drivers. These cards are not intended for gaming, rather they are for things like 3D rendering, computer drafting, and graphic design.

The 2500M is their top-of-the-line mobile card at the moment.

EDIT: Beaten like a red-headed stepchild!

Money is no object as its funded by work. I want it to be able to play games, but its a secondary consideration. I know it will do what i want it to do, but looking around i cant seem to find any comparisons of this against a desktop for gaming.

So with that in mind its likely to be comparable to the 7900 series?

It does use the G71 GPU, just like the 7900. If you do not intend to use this for workstation tasks you should be looking for a gaming notebook. A Geforce Go7900GTX is far better suited toward running games at full screen than a Quadro card.

Just becasue it is expensive does not mean that it is the best for the task. What is the intended task for the machine?

Well, I need it as a work machine, but I cant just go and get a pure gaming laptop, has to be justified. The tiny bit of rendering that I do is my justification for getting a laptop with a decent gfx card, but it has to be a business machine. So to be fair, its the best of what i can get. Just wondering what sort of performance i'd get out of it.

I have played on SLi Quadro and the experience was poor in terms of fps, the dual 7900GTX's I have played on, were faster in terms of gaming.

As a bar, you can consider the fps similar to a 7600- 7800 with problems with drivers that cannot comprehend what's going on in the game.

I wouldn't suggest playing games with a Quadro, but it certainly is possible.

Just be careful when you do play games on it...and prepare yourself for the odd freeze-frame and lockups..otherwise the card runs just like normal a gaming card - and the graphics looks just as good too :)

As for running on a Laptop - that I haven't tried. - the above experience is what I had with a Desktop. You can probably expect a similar experience on a decent Laptop.

Well its turned up and its quite good, certainly good enough for the odd game here and there. Not had any problems playing games on it, no lock ups or anything like that.
