Pretty cool but also pretty demanding (60 FPS 2560x1440, RTX2080Ti), but it seems it's the number of light sources (which quake 2 has lots of still) on a scene and not geometric complexity is what sucks performance.

A Fully Ray-traced Unreal1 might be fun to see!
 
And this gives a good example of why raytracing is still years off, a game from 22 years ago getting under 60fps in some instances on nvidia's ti. Would be interesting to see how bfv would run if they done this level of RT, 2-5fps maybe?

This is full path tracing. Path tracing is monumentally more computational than a simple ray tracer. Hence why the author is impressed enough that it works at all. In addition, there is a minimum of 4 rays being cast per pixel at any given time. That's double the number that NVIDIA has been quoted as using for its current real-time hybrid implementations.

And at the minute all nvidia are doing is reflections, when they start going global illumination as well as reflections there's likely going to be a far bigger hit than just reflections alone. So again, performance going down for visual improvements that are barely noticeable, going to be a hard sell.

That statement is at odds with itself, as the more rendering purposes you replace rasterisation with ray tracing, the more visual benefit there will be (in time).

We all know the ray tracing in the RTX series is woeful but that's not what this is about. 4 rays per pixel in a fully path traced environment running at 60fps is a glorious thing! The ball is rolling now, developers are able to start genuinely playing with real time tracing and (more or less) they have the hardware to be able to take these first steps.

We got to start somewhere. We'd all prefer that starting point wasn't a grotesque abuse of position and greed, but nonetheless it's a start.
 
Watching that video brought back memories of playing that for the first time. Even recognised some of the level design, which isn't bad considering how old it is or how shabby my memory is.

However, it still looks crap, RT or not. :p

Well put, not sure what people expect to see with the technology in its infancy. We have to start somewhere.

Spot on. I wish others would see it this way and whilst NVidia are charging stupid money, it is a start and yer, 60 fps at 1440P is laughable but when you consider what is being done, it gives me some real hope that the future is coming quickly.

Woeful ? It's only implemented in 1 game and you're getting 60-70fps @ 4k with RT on and everything maxed. What's woeful about that ?
