What do i need to enable this, will one of the new ATI cards be enough with specs in sig, and also there was mention of a flash light mod for doom 3, anyone have a link as im going to play doom 3 for the first time ever bar tinkering a few years ago on the first level.

Ultra quality sets itself fine on my gf 6800GS 256 mb on both q4 and d3.
Both games give some kind of warning but after pressign ok they run ok.

Quake 4 gives vram lag when loading new lvls when opening doors the 1st time, smooth otherwise...
Doom3 is lag free & smooth.

I don't know the ati situation, but i know nvidia is a bit better with opengl as ati comparable cards, and that quake4 & d3 like high cpu frequency's (ran better on p4's than a64's).

But with specs in sig your they should run A-ok, provided the gfx has 512 mb of vram, if not q4 might show a stutter each time when opening a door.

later ati drivers improve on their opengl copability , but i seem to have problems running anything higher than the 6.3s =/.

According to JC, Ultra setting is targeted at 512meg+ cards. So the HD2900XT should be fine, although obviously a 8800GTX would be better.

I'd imagine you also need 1gig+ of system memory for D3 and 1.25gig+ for Q4.

OP has 4 gb ;)

8800gtx is overkill though for such a game like d3, all it needs is a good cpu and a 7600GT like card tbh to run @ ultra...

I remember playing the demo on a 9800 pro I think... got about 5fps. It's amazing how things move on so fast.

Ultra with maximum settings is hard on the graphics memory more than the GPU, so if your X1800XT is 256MB it's going to struggle a lot more than a 512MB one would.

little bit off topic but if your planning a doom3 run through, then i would recommend playing it with the Co-op mod and find someone to play it with, its good fun.

My rig runs Quake 4 no probs, maintains a silky framerate in ultra mode, even with all that action!

...but could you blow some Muthas???

Oh yes indeed, and it doesn't even stutter as my CPU loads the next part!
It even stays silky if I turn the flashlight on, for even more detail!

just a shame Q4 is such a rubbish game.....
I was hoping for Q3 with delish graphics, but it's not that. However I am pleasantly surprised with the Singleplayer. It's what D3 should have been. :)

I have a system that can't play Q4 with anything but the minimum settings - and still has trouble :( Where is my problem?

6800GT 256mb
AMD [email protected]
2.5GB speedy ram.

I literally cant turn anything on in the advanced graphics settings :(

I asked about a CPU upgrade [thread=17728180]here[/thread], does anyone think that would let me up the quality a bit?

I ran Doom 3 at ultra settings plus AA & AF forced to max in driver and framerate was constantly capped at 60fps.

However 1800XT struggles with ultra settings quite a bit on Q4.
