Quake 4 and Doom 3 Ultra settings.

I could run Ultra on Doom 3 on a X800GTO if I remember correctly.

Old PC, that's with a 3000+ AMD 64 too.
Do you still get 60fps with all the action though

:D

I have a system that can't play Q4 with anything but the minimum settings - and still has trouble :( Where is my problem?

6800GT 256mb
AMD [email protected]
2.5GB speedy ram.

I literally cant turn anything on in the advanced graphics settings :(

I asked about a CPU upgrade [thread=17728180]here[/thread], does anyone think that would let me up the quality a bit?

The cu will be a fault.

aving said that my dad runs it fine on a p4 clocked at 3.6ghz with a 6800gt and 2 gigs of ram. I cant rem what settings he has it on but I know its not minimum. I seem to rem even putting on some AA.

What 3dmark do you get? Are any other games slow? Do you have Doom 3 ? What drivers are you using ?

what about when you get the shotgun out and blow those mothers away?

Problem with the shotgun, is you loose the ability to use the torch, which as you know, gives you even more detail!

Aye, the guy's a legend. I can see such comments being used for some time to come!

I can't wait to see UT3 and Crysis, and see how that performs with all that action. All those Muthas on screen, so much action, could stress EVEN the 8600!!!

Doom 3 is at moderate settings (not high though!) and runs alright, I am using version 93.71 of the drivers, but there was no difference when I was using 91.?? a while ago.
I did get pretty poor performance in BF2142 demo, and Supreme Commander/C&C3 both have to be at pretty low settings.

Sorry I don't know the 3DMark.

I recently purchased a 24" monitor and with my 7900GTX I have to drop the AA and AF slightly. but other tha that it runs perfectly at native res and ultra settings.

ive just lobbed Doom 3 on my system as ive never been able to run it on Ultra, but it wont bloody launch, keep getting 'error during initialization' with 'ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary features.'

so i guess my 8800's drivers wont work 158.24 ? soz for off topic derailment any ideas ?

My old rig was a Pentium 4 3.0GHz oc'd to 3.3GHz with 1 GB of DDR400 and a GeForce 6800 GT. Ran beautifully in high quality mode, stuttered a fair bit in Ultra though, not enough VRAM. Before, this, I was using the same CPU but with 512MB of DDR400 and a 9800 Pro with 128MB of VRAM running in medium. It ran well but it would stutter for a few seconds when the level first loaded due to the low RAM. I can never really tell much visual difference between high quality and ultra quality though. Does anyone have a good comparison screenshot where the differences are more obvious? The textures seem very much identical, I think it may be to do more with the lighting, for instance better specular lighting on bump mapped surfaces.

Managed to get doom 3 to run pretty much fine at max everything on ultra, just no AA as it goes chug central, same as quake 4 when i put any AA on, got the flash light mod for d3, makes the game playable now. Dont have to hide behind the toaster every 5 seconds now. Some good "action" though :)

Flashlight mod eh? Think I may have to do the same :p

Have ordered a e4400 and mobo to try and get my PC back into shape, fingers crossed this will let me enjoy the games I've bought recently :)

does D3 and Q4 fully support dual core? I gotta pentium D 2.8GHz 1Gb ram, thinking of upgrading graphics card.

I seem to remember a dual core option in the settings. (Q4)

(after being patched)

Lol Cowards! ;) :D

I found that once I configured the flashlight to one of the 5 buttons on the mouse it was a lot easier (i.e less scarier!).

little bit off topic but if your planning a doom3 run through, then i would recommend playing it with the Co-op mod and find someone to play it with, its good fun.
Actually that sounds like fun, pity the game didn't include that option by default?. What's involved in this 'co-op' mod then?

Just been playing this seems that Ultra is quite a hog I can manage Ultra settings at 1680x1050 with 4xAA soon as I ramp it up it takes its toll. But then If I use High settings I can run it up to 8xAA comfortably it may be because I only have 512mb of memory that may limit it some what.

I agree, Doom3 is SUPPOSED to be dark and scary in places - not being able to use a flashlight and weapon at the same time is a gameplay mechanic. It forces the player to make a choice about what to do - go in toting your hefty plasmagun and risk getting ambushed, or risk getting out your torch and then being forced to quickly switch back? I know some people moaned about it being too dark in general, but all you need to do is bump up the r_gamma / r_brightness variables. I actually found darkness FAR more of a problem in HL2 than D3, because there was an idiotic hardcoded limit to how much you could tweak the brightness in that game.

As for co-op, I used to love Doom2 co-op. Probably not quite as good in D3 due to the lack of huge monster rushes :)

Having just built my new rig comprising a E6850, 4x1GB Ballistix PC2-6400, Abit IP35 Pro, Vista 64 with a Dell 2407 monitor would you expect to be able to run Quake 4 with all the settings maxed??

After playing with it at the weekend if I put the AA/AF above 4x the frame rate drops (using FRAPs) from a solid 60 to a varying amount.

I'm not up on the whole AA/AF thing so perhaps this would be considered normal?

Other setting are Ultra quality 1920 x 1080, multi core setting on yes and some other things I can't remember at this moment, oh and its patched to the latest version.

I guess it depends what graphics card you have? :D

I ran Q4 at ultra setting at 1280x1024 with 16xAA and was getting between 30-60FPS it did get laggy at some points so i put it back down to high settings. The visual difference is minimal tbh.

EDIT: That was on my 8800GTS 640mb
