Quake Live Duels

Unfortunately I don't get much time to play nowadays but I'd be up for some duels for fun. Add me :p Profile in signature. I'm a duel noob and pretty noob in general.

How does it compare to the earlier games? I'm looking for a challenging FPS, and from what I've heard I'll get truly owned for a long time before I get the hang of it...
If I play free for all, I can get to the top of the server pretty easily...if I play any other mode though I get owned.

So, just stick to FFA and you should do alright, if you have any modicum of fps skill.

Quake is not really beginner friendly as most people have been playing it for years. Play dm first and learn the maps and the gun locations is my first tip. If you want to try some teamwork go for ctf as that is a great game type. I strongly suggest you stay away from clanarena as the skill level is very high. It may sound fun that you start with all the weapons but when you see people rocket jumping all over the map and quick switching its next to impossible for a beginner.

Still trying to get the movement down properly (strafe jumping being the real sticking point), then will try to learn the maps as when I played a FFA match I was running around with a machine gun and no armour getting rocketed and railed :D As far as I can tell my aim is decent enough.
Scarecrow what do you mean quick switching?

Quick switching is a term used back in the day about quick rotation between weapons. My rotation normally involves rocket followed by lightning gun. Get some binds set up for a few weapons and practice flicking between then. I have a bind for rail, rocket, lightning and grenade. Dont do mouse wheel as its really slow flicking between weapons. Also there is a delay flicking to or between rail and rocket but its instant going to lightning so its quick to finish someone off.

Ah sweet, thanks mate, I'll take a look into that. I did notice a delay switching from rail, very interesting to know there are ways around that!

Right, had a few games, got owned the first time, but had a few FFA rounds that went quite well. I'm still getting the hang of the movement and might be for a while yet, but now it's come together a bit it is great fun! I'll be sticking with BC2 for a while yet too though and just playing QL a bit on the side until I'm actually good, and while BC2 is still going (fairly) strong.

I've added Invasive and hyper_ as friends, thanks guys.

EDIT: Forgot to add, my QL nick is VinOptimax!

Hi. I have just started playing this the last few days. Finding its pretty tough so far but getting used to again, slowly.. Droolinggimp is my GL tag. Im up for a few games tonight if anyone is on.

I've played - and killed - you a couple of times. :D Just moved up to level 4 in FFA, but am level 3 and 2 in everything else (tried a couple of duels and team matches ages ago, did very badly).

QL username is the same as this one, add me and we'll have a match sometime. :)

Edit: Added you instead, you had a match only a few minutes ago. :p

Yeah I see you. I have accepted you request.. Cant believe how fast paced the game is and how good players are. I keep finishing middle of the table when games are ended. my k/d is 50/50 ish

Edit: K/D 176/351 I SUCK

I was doing a little worse than you when I first started. :) For every ~50 kills, I was getting 100 deaths. Now though, it's more like 50 kills and 35 deaths.

Make sure you've mapped your weapons to buttons which are easily accessible, I use the F, E, Q, R keys etc for weapons. Try learning how to
strafe jump and rocket jump, your aim will improve on its own anyway so don't worry about that. Make sure you use a variety of weapons too;
you need to be able to kill people in any situation.

Eventually you'll start finding it easy, and will be able to rocket and strafe jump all the time, have high accuracy, use any weapon and be able to
keep an eye on armor/megahealth/quad damage respawns. Having said that, I've still got a long way to go myself. :D

How good are you Valkia? Just got my *** handed to me on a silver platter on a level 4 server, 3 times as many deaths as I had kills.

Edit: Went from winning a game in level 3 with 50 frags and around 35 deaths, to losing a game at level 4 with 6 frags and 34 deaths. Quite a large difference between the two! Hope to get put down a level again. :p

Just accepted your friend invite, thanks.

Last few times I've played I've just been messing around in practice trying to get my strafe jumping respectable. Still a way to go to master it I think - the bridge to rail bit of the strafing practice is a real problem for me :D
