Quality socket sets/tools

Perhaps I should replace stuff over time then... it's the masonry drill bits that have let me down with the Bosch stuff. I'll keep the box and replace the bits inside it with decent ones.

I don't like paying monopoly prices so snap-on was out of my price range until,

Hard-up mate with a penchant for excessive drinking and herbal tobacco decided he needed to fund his weekend habit but had no cash,

I got a 3/8 snap-on set 5-19mm with ratchet and extension bar for £30:D

That was about 19 years ago and he must have asked me a hundred times to sell him it back, its just the right set for most of what I do which is work on my two vintage trials bikes.

As people have said above though Halfords pro is the shizzle for the price!.

FAO those who say about moving parts in the tools, its the same for all makes, you have to buy repair kits for ratchets etc, AFIK Halfords do the same.

Halford pro +1.

They actually replaced a ratchet for me too with no quibbles, tho it broke very early on so I genuinely think it was faulty anyway.

Some of my SDS drills have cost £20 to £25 each and not £20 for 10.

I can get Sealey stuff through work at cost price. does this make it an attractive purpose given the cost?

The Halfords Pro set that I have seems to permanently be 'half price'...

Fantastic value for that price, even has ratchet ring spanners - om nommm. I've been using Halfords Pro for 10+ years and never had any quality issues - good stuff. They are good on their warranty too - one time I went in three times in a day with a broken 24" breaker bar - replaced each time without question. Eventually I realised the Sierra rear hub nut I was trying to undo (by jumping on a 6' scaffold pole used to extend the Halfords breaker bar) was, in fact, a left-handed thread. Doh :)

I was an apprentice heavy plant fitter around 25 years ago and I bought Snap-On gear then, still going strong today, only had to have the tang replaced in 1 screwdriver out of all the stuff I have.

Im a firm believer of you get what you pay for and although they cost me a lot, 25 years still going strong is well worth the money I paid.

Indeed, the "half price" price is what those tools are worth and I wouldn't pay any more for them.

But... I don't think the ratchets are great quality compared to the competition and I've found the spanners are quite soft and mangle quite easily if you get manly on them. That said, the spanners do feel nice in the hand to use. I haven't tried to replace my damaged ones yet, but I ought to warn that I've had problems getting exchanges with their long warranty batteries, when they've blatantly completely failed, so I'll probably stick my neck out and say that they won't 'just' swap stuff for you.
