Query about removing heatsink from Sapphire 4850

I'm about to move all my bits into a new case today and i'm planning on doing a dust removal and new thermal paste job on my GPU and CPU. I've never taken my 4850 apart before and there appears to be some thermal pads (on the mem chips?). Should i be try to make sure that these remain on the chips are is it possible to put them back should they come off since i dont have any replacements?

I did the same to mine when i replaced the cooler on my Sapphire 4850.

The thermal pads offered no resistance when i removed the stock cooler so i wouldn't worry too much but take care anyway.
 
So the thermal pads should should just remain on the chips and not come away with the cooler?

Hmm, now you are asking. When i replaced the cooler on my card i used seperate ram sinks on the memory chips as the new cooler didn't make contact with them.

If you are just removing the dust can you not just use a can of air to blow it out instead of taking it apart?

I have done already but I have some MX-3 which I want replace the stock gunk.
 
is it the single slot sapphire 4850 with the copper coloured pins over the VRMs? If so, and probably the case even if different, then the thermal 'pads' are a crappy thermal soft plasticine with the consistency of mozzarella and about as sticky... They're about 1mm thick iirc. You can get sticky thermal pad tape for about £2 on the bay. Or you can just put the stock stuff back in place - doubt it's very good though.

Yeah its single slot, 512mb purchase in Jan 09. Off the top of my head i dont know if it has copper coloured pins over the VRMs.
 
When I took my 4870 apart a couple of these pads were stuck to the heatsink as it came off, they just peeled off and went back on the mem chips without any problem. Don't think they do a whole lot to be honest but they stuck back on and stay in place fine so i wouldn't worry about it too much.
