Quest 2 Virtual Desktop Performance Thread

Cheers for that. Inching ever closer to making an purchase...

ah, don't be hesitating!! What's the worse that could happen? You try it, if don't like it just return it or just sell it on.

My bet is that once you try it out wirelessly for a few days, you will keep it!!

So just to touch base on this Q2 VD....

Since purchasing the Q2, Ive not used the Link cable once.....
Its all being wireless, and its really just incredible.

My only gripe is the battery power. Despite having the Elite strap with battery, you still need to remember to charge it in between gaming sessions!

I'm tempted to splash out for a proper mesh wi-fi setup, as that seems to give the best results for Q2 VD. Trouble is it's very expensive, and don't know if I can really justify it.

What is this mesh wifi setup? (Sorry basic question!)
What makes it different to bog standard WiFi6?

It's a router and extender modules that work together to form a single wi-fi network. They work much better than normal range extenders, as they're tightly integrated and designed to create a seamless wi-fi network throughout the house. The good ones are £400 though!

It would only be better if you are using the Quest 2 in different parts of the house and your router is not in the same room as where you are using the Quest 2.

It's not going to be better than having a dedicated router for the Quest 2.

EDIT: just want to expand on this. If been able to play around the house with minimal latency is really what you are after. Running network cable to separate access points would be much better and probably cheaper depending on your house.

Yep, running cable is the ideal solution, but it's a pain in the backside, as my router is in the attic, so I would probably have to run cable down the outside of the house.

It would be cheaper and a lot better. The main cost would be effort needed.

How is the electrical wiring in your house? If it's a new house or has recently been rewired then why don't you give powerline adapters a try? I am presuming your PC is connected wirelessly to the Router at the moment? If you got the powerline adapter it would look like this :- Main Router to Powerline adapter to dedicated Quest 2 access point to PC.

I can give some input on powerline adaptors which I have tried in my investigations.

They do work but performance on VD would suffer.... based on testing something in the region of another 10-20ms.
Which is not catastrophic but it does add up.

If you dont mind that, then go for it, it could be a much cheaper solution....

I've got powerline adaptors, but don't get an amazing connection with them. I tried them for Steam Link a while ago and the results weren't amazing.

I'll have to do a new bandwith test on them.

Yeah, it all adds up. But, it depends on a couple of things, how good the wiring is in your house and the quality of powerline adapters.

And the extra latency will be a problem if he is using the Powerline adapters to connect the main router to the PC and still use the main router for the Quest 2.

If he is using the adapters to to connect the main router to a router dedicated to the Quest 2, then that's a different story.

I know, they can work brilliantly or not at all.

Lay the cable :)

Let's be absolutely clear that I'm holding you personally responsible for this.

Just ordered one!

Amazingly you can also play VR games on it as well as fiddling with accessories and wireless connections. :D

No way!!! That's amazing, the Quest 2 the gift that keeps on giving.

Will try some of those "game" things someday. Just trying to get my 1000 hour achievement in MVH Head Strap adjustment :p

Just got a Quest 2 to try out as a replacement for a CV1 and I have been trying VD as it's an absolute killer feature. I have a 5G mesh and router, been playing around and created a seperate WIFI network for the Quest on the main router (getting 826Mpbs from the Q2 to the router) and the PC is directly into the router for 1000mbps. Lowest I can seem to manage latency wise is 40ms in VR and that's with trying everyones typical recommend settings. The experience is fine for most things, I am super impressed (Especially for the price point).

However Flight Sims just don't have the performance, it's massivley noticeable. I am not sure if it's frame rate or latency? The image is massivley clearer but it's just not consistently smooth. I am lucky enough to have a 3080FE and on the CV1 it's silkly smooth in Aerofly 2.

It has occured to me, is it because my monitor is 60hz? VD says it's running 90hz and 90FPS but I am unsure if this is accurate. Does anyone else use VD for sims?

I would say it's a combination of both for the flight sims. I am not sure Virtual desktop will be good enough. But, let me ask you what settings you are using in Virtual desktop. Starting with the Virtual desktop Streamer app. What codec are you using and have you the "Automically adjust bitrate" option unticked?

Now when you start Virtual desktop and go into the streaming section, what settings have you used? VR Bitrate especially.
