Ok folks,

Got two Quest 2s and looking to set up wifi connection to PC today so I can test higher resolution game play and the like.

Just wanting to check how I do this as some of this involves buying apps/software, so don't want to waste money!

Done so far:
- Have set up both Quests already through Meta store
- Have just installed the dedicated Asus Wifi 6 AX5400 router I bought based on your recommendations for this and set up a unique wifi network for this
- I've positioned it in the lounge (so it'll be about 1.5 metres from the VR sets when being played), connected to the CAT6 ethernet cable that runs through a couple of switches to the upstairs where both PCs are based.

To do:
- I've seen a few folks checking the speed that the wifi6 is running at, not sure how I do this in ASUS' app? Or do I do this through the headset?
- Next I 'think' I need to buy two copies of virtual desktop for each headset - this I believe will let be connect to the two PCs remotely through the VR sets. Although I've seen different apps recommended
- Then I guess I can run steam VR or something through these to then play games?

As you can see I get fuzzier in the to do list - any pointers appreciated!

lets start from the beginning

you have set up your Quest 2, so that you can see the online store through your headset all ok ?

if you click on the internet signal on the menu screen in your headset (its bottom left) or go into settings > internet or what ever its called (where you can see your headset as "connected" it should say a speed i think there

I use Virtual Desktop to link to my PC via wireless, i find its better than the inbuilt "air link"

you need to download Virtual desktop "steamer" on your PC and download "Virtual Desktop" through your headset

When you got it running on your PC (it boots with PC) and on your headset, open VD, once connected you will see the VD menu, if not, hit your home button on your "left" controller, here you can see what speed your connected at
you need 5Ghz minimum really

then to play a game, click on "games" on the left in the VD menu and your in

Speed - ah yes, spotted it now - going at 1200, so think this is good news?

Virtual Desktop - perfect, thanks for clarity - ok downloading Virtual Desktop streamer app, have bought and downloaded the virtual desktop app and then will see where I get too!
Assume I'll be able to access my steam VR games through this? (sure I'll work it out)

yes, it automatically loads steam VR for you
you just click on "games" on the left as i mentioned :)

looks like this :

All working - very smooth so far!

Downloading Half life Alyx to this PC to give it a road test!

I take it any games I've bought in Oculus Store will need to be rebought to play them through steam/virtual desktop (ie to get full quality graphics?)

Some, not all. The oculus app on pc will show 'get' instead of a price for the games that you already own that are both pcvr and quest 2 compatible.

some Oculus games work in native Quest 2 standalone AND on PC, just by buying once, but you need to check before buying (check on the Quest store first)

Beat saber IS NOT one of them

and nor is In-Death

But if you buy via steam, you will need to rebuy them on quest if you want it standalone too

Ah ok, think this is the result of us all signing over the games we used to buy to 'services' we now have to buy multiple times!

So to be clear, is Oculus 'PC' the same as steam games or do I have to play through Oculus air link rather than virtual desktop?

You can still play them via virtual desktop

steam games remain on steam (PC)

Oculus games usually are both (Quest AND PC) but you need to check before you buy

Tricky one really to know where to purchase games on both - I'd 'imagine' steam is the better option (ie quite possible I buy a different VR set in a few years that's non-oculus, but feels unlikely I won't be using Steam....?

Depends, the biggest selling point of Quest 2 is that it is totally standalone so you can just up and take it elsewhere and play.
The downside is, as you say, that if you got a different PC VR headset in the future you wouldn't be able toplay Quest 2 games.

Think all the modern games are crossbuy, the older ones that required significant rewrites to adapt to standalone in the first place tend to charge for the different versions, since they took a significant amount of work to adapt.
