Quest 3 owners etc

Certainly looks like it is more of a media consumption device rather than a gaming one. Especially as it doesn't come with controllers. Pricing rumour also suggests going for the AVP and possibly new Samsung headset range.

Everything I'd seen upto now suggested the puffin next year, glasses with a puck for processing, with quest 4 coming 2027 continuing the quest line.

It is very noticeable. However, a 3s will play everything a 3 will. Given the massive price difference, I'd go with the 3s I reckon, but budget matters.

Get a referral from someone, whether it's someone here, or a friend you have with one. That'll give you £23 store credit.

Set up an account under your email/name. Protect it with a pin.

Setup a secondary account for your son. Make all purchases on the primary account and allow account sharing. This way if your son is for any reason banned, you don't lose your purchases.

It also then gives you a chance to try it, fall in love, buy a second headset yourself and play together in vr. You may want to try a Q3 for that. Then upgrade your son too.... Wait, that was me (well, q2 to Q3, but close enough).

Edit The 128gb is likely enough. The games that take up a ton of room will fit, and are often single player. Unless he's playing through several long single player games at once, he'll be fine. He won't be installing and uninstalling daily.
Good info thanks.

Also same position as me, 10 year old son, was thinking 3S even if id want the 3 - its just too pricey.

Just to ask, will it work well with a PC? Any difference in the 3 vs 3S for that use?

Ps. It will likely be PC use in addition to normal use.

3S will work just the same as the 3 for PCVR. The big difference being the panels and lenses on the 3 being much better. You'll still have a good experience though.

Thanks. I will pull the trigger in the 3s.

My son wears glasses so i may need the prescription lenses also depending on how he gets on.

Have any of you guys tried Microsoft flight simulator using PC link with the meta quest 3?

Does it work well? If so would I be better to buy the game in Steam the store or the windows store?

I've got MS Flightsim 2020 and played it in VR on Quest Pro which has a lower resolution than Q3. I presume 2024 is similar in its VR performance. In my experience you need a monster PC to get the best out of it in VR.

It's very CPU and GPU intensive, and even more so in VR. 2024 apparently has better multi-threading so might work a bit better.

Let's put it this way - I have a 5950X3D and a 5090, and I have to use DLSS in FS 2020 to keep a stable framerate at a decent level of detail.

Of course you can always lower the settings and the resolution to improve performance.

Sounds like it might be a struggle to run smoothly in VR as I have an RTX 5070Ti!

Does it make much difference whether you buy the game on Steam or through the Microsoft Store?

It will probably struggle, but you might get a reasonable experience with the details dropped down, DLSS on and possibly forced reprojection at 45fps.

Doesn't make much difference which version you get as all the main content is downloaded from Microsoft servers anyway. The game on steam is basically just a front-end to download the rest of the game anyway.

Can anyone who has the Wander app (Street view on VR) check if its working as mine hasn't these past few days, a reinstall and just a black screen,

Thanks.

Not got time to overly use it as such, but I have just tested it out and it works as normal for me. That is starting it up and "wandering" around in street view.

Ah, I see V83 of the firmware is out for trying. Let's see how much I can now hide / get rid of from Meta :)

Thanks. This is really strange I have bought and own the Wander app, and it used to work fine, but now I can only access it if I turn on my VPN on my Quest. I wonder what can cause this.

Update,

Found the cause disabling IPV6 in the Eero router fixed it.

as a side project i thought this was interesting

been playing around with bazzite / steamlink ect

in not able to get steam link to work correctly for vr at the moment, it hangs and very blury on linux.
on pc its blury.

VD doesnt seem to support linux.

i was able to connect a wired controller directly to the quest 3 and use that to play some games over steam link in desktop mode. seems to work ok, noticed some lag, but also lag on vd
