wouldn't the Snapdragon 888 based chip support all the features in the quest 2 (but be about 30% faster?)
Yeah the res is still excellent on the Quest 2 and really doesn't need to be super higher. Wouldn't complain at a higher one thoughThe Quest 2 XR2 chip is actually limited by thermal and battery life considerations. It's considerably downclocked from its maximum speed.
Carmack has hinted that the thermal limits were set very conservatively, and it's possible they could unlock a higher CPU clock rate. That coupled with the new Application Spacewarp technique that allows games to get more compute time by running games at half frame rate while the compositor runs at full frame-rate, we could see a big increase in game complexity without upping the hardware specs.
However I do think the next headset needs a wider FOV, as it's really annoying switching from my Index to have such a narrow field of view, with the edges of the panel visible, plus it really needs separate LCD panels so that wider IPDs can be supported.
I think the resolution is plenty good enough though. It's high enough that SDE is no longer an issue, and it makes the Quest 2 a great media viewing device.
If the only change was oLed, I would buy it.
One of the reasons I'm excited for the psvr 2, along with HDR as well!If the only change was oLed, I would buy it.
Quest 3 will have uOLED
Cumbria will have mini LED

Yeah with psvr 2 getting a larger fov and the primary pc headset being the index the quest 2 is left behind slightly in this area. Would be good to get an improvement on it. Would love to go back to oled screens as well with psvr 2 getting thatSo, Cambria is pretty much the "Quest 2 Pro", I read somewhere that there may not be much improvement in FOV, thats a bit of a disappointment IMO, the other features all sound great but its one of the things I feel desperately needs an upgrade.
Wouldn't surprise me if Cambria is data gathering focused.
Use Cambria face and eye tracking to hone systems that'll be used in the quest 3 a bit later. I'd guess quest 3 comes 2023 myself.
Quest 2 is still virtually on its own with regards to standalone and wireless. Still surprises me that psvr2 opted against a wireless possibility.
Wireless = battery so it's heavy, downtime for charging, more heat generated, wireless needs compression and creates latency
With wireless you gain mobility but then you have a larger heavier headset and lower image quality and higher latency
All VR headsets have Latency. With a dedicated wireless adapter like the Vive Pro 2, the latency between wired and wireless wouldn't be noticeable. And even if there is a difference in latency it still might not be noticeable as it all depends on how good the tracking prediction is on the headset.
Headset weight, that's a load of rubbish. A headset with a battery doesn't have to be heavier or larger than a headset without one. The Quest 2 is lighter than the Valve Index, Vive Pro 2, Reverb G2. We don't know what weight the PSVR 2 is going to be. But, the overall weight isn't the most important thing, it's how balanced the weight is.
Lower image quality, well that depends too. If you compare the image quality on Airlink now vs Airlink when it was first released, you would be amazed at how much the quality has improved. It's almost at the stage now where you would have to go looking to spot the differences between wired and wireless in most games.
