Quest or S?

I still think scaling is an issue on the Quest - the software part of the IPD adjust doesn't seem to work properly, resulting in a smaller world scale.

Yup. Its clearly not 100% optimised yet but I think they have room for improvement. The world scale shouldn't be difficult to work out. They have a tiny bit room for a clarity boost and then I think they need to work on increasing the vibrancy of the colours as they're not taking full advance of the OLED panels.

Carmack mentioned long term wise they could potentially exponentially increase the quality of the Quest via Link but it'd take a lot of time and work with hardware people.

It depends how long you intend to keep the headset I guess. I intend to use my Rift S for 3 or 4 years.

Would the quest as a standalone headset last that long?

I can upgrade my pc in 3 years and still use the Rift S.

Okay the quest is tethered but it defeats the object. It's like a disposable camera, when it's CPU can't cope, the headset gets thrown in the trash.

The Quest being used as a tethered headset is a bonus, I understand what you mean by it defeating the object but it allows you to play full powered pc games like Lone Echo so I don't think it's right to dismiss the feature. No need to throw away as long as your pc is suitable for pcvr

The Quest has Virtual Desktop, like Oculus Link but wireless. Full PC games but on the Quest display and controllers.

I bought a Rift S having upgraded the graphics to 2070S in the summer.
The Rift S is great, comfy (kids were on for about 8 hours yesterday) and they are happy with the sound.
I've not got much of a look in yet, but the only issue is getting no conflicts between the Oculus app and Steam VR, when buying the games through Steam.

I have set the Oculus app to run in admin mode. Sometimes the PC monitor shows the Steam VR to have all bits working, but there is no output on the RiftS itself, even though I can see the Steam menu room.
The games (bought through Steam), now appear in the Oculus app.
When launched through there they then work by launching SteamVR - not the whole Steam client (I think).
Seems to work but not sure why....
