The Quest Pro has dropped $500 to $999.

Sucks a bit for early adopters like myself but I'm glad it dropped as hopefully more people will buy one and it'll be better supported.

The 256gb Quest 2 drops to $430

Not sure what the UK prices will be.

Edit: Apparently goes down 5th March in US & Canada, 15th March rest of the world.

I can see a lot more people are interested now at that price. At $999 it's competing directly with the Index, and parks Meta's tanks on HTC's lawn with regard to the HTC Vive XR Elite.

I wonder does this mean the controllers will be reduced in price as well??

Think they will have to reduce the price even more if they want to improve sales. With the latest leaks for the Quest 3 putting it at half the weight and at least twice the power of the Quest 2 and likely going to be a lot cheaper than $999. These leaks make the Quest Pro an unattractive proposition even at $999.

While this price reduction is welcome, I think my next headset will need to have a big FOV, so I'll probably give pimax a go..... god help me.

It wasn't really aimed at common consumers before though, I'm wondering if this change to to try and induce consumers to buy it. Depends on just what's missing from the q3 vs the pro. I'm guessing pro controllers, and miniled screens won't be on the q3.

The "big" issue will be software I reckon. Though with 20 million q2's sold, I cannot imagine a developer not bothering to produce for them. There's also a rumoured very cheap meta headset coming in 2024, and I'd guess that's more or less going to be a relaunch of a q2, with a few tweaks, but still not as powerful as the q3.

Reminds me of the Amiga 1000 which was originally promoted by Commodore as a business computer, but it was actually the best games machine on the market.

Someone pointed out that it's like the Pro is a pair of running shoes, but was marketed as a pair of work shoes. All the runners aren't interested in work shoes, but they'd buy running shoes, and the workers who wanted a pair of work shoes got a pair of running shoes that weren't really suitable for work.

If you mean the 8KX then it's very likely EOL now. It's only available to buy new in (iirc) Japan and Australia and that's probably only because they have some stock left there which won't last. They pop up used on Ebay etc. The Crystal is not big fov, it's 103 horizontal and vertical. The 12K will be big fov but that won't be released for a good while, next year sometime probably.

Bos the head of VR at Meta has said the Pro will be on the market for a long time.

It even looks like Quest 2 might continue alongside Quest 3 for a while at least.

Does mean some difficulties for developers though as they have to target three platforms with different power and abilities.

Most will probably go for lowest common denominator which in this case will be q2.

Maybe, don't know if they already do it, but more powerful systems than q2 may do some super sampling like the pc does.

Awful news!

I’d just about decided that a Quest 2 would be a good replacement for my much-loved Rift due to the cost of the Quest Pro, now I’ve got to start the decision process again!

<sigh>

I think the Crystal FoV is supposed to be larger than that, the numbers I've seen quoted are 140 diagonal with the 35ppd lenses.

Of course that maybe nonsense, whilst I'm interested in the Pimax Crystal I'm acutely aware of Pimax's track record, you don't want to order anything until:
- they have a range of reviews from reputable sources to backup the specs and build quality
- have addressed the issues and your not relying on a future update
- the accessories are available too
- most importantly that it can be purchased from a retailer that will take it back if there are day1 issues, let them deal with Pimax

the 12k is going to be expensive and you have to question the obvious elephant in the room.... If an RTX 4090 just about gives good results on todays hi-res HMDs, what realistically are you going to need to drive the 12k especially when sims like DCS and MSFS are very hard to drive decent framerates as is...

That's Pimax's claimed diagonal fov figure yes, but they've sent some Crystals out to beta testers in China and they have measured the fov to be a maximum of 103 horizontal and 103 vertical (Pimax claimed it'd be 125 horizontal at 35ppd).

Have just started warming up "she who must be obeyed" to the idea of buying one at the new cost.
Just gotta wait for the the UK price drop.

My wife loved the open front design and the MR puzzles like Cubism and Puzzling places.

We often play Walkabout Minigolf together too, me on the Pro, her on the Quest 2.

oh interesting I didn't know that, could be the first wave of fact vs. fiction coming in

We've seen this far too often recently, new headsets hyped and in practice disappointing.

Ironically the Quest Pro was dismissed at launch as a souped up Quest 2 only for businesses and not that great resolution, then users found it was way better than most of the reviews suggested, and it's gradually building a reputation as being probably the best all-round headset out there.
