Quest Pro drops to $999, Quest 2 256gb to $430

I’d have actually been tempted by the Quest pro with the recent price cuts were it not for the fact that the Quest 3 is all but confirmed for release later this year.

Yep, the biggest issue is that we don't know exactly how they will compare.

However I doubt Meta will release a £500 headset that outclasses their Pro £1000 headset.

There will be compromises, we don't know what yet.

I don't know why they couldn't. It happens all the time, where the consumer version of a product is as good, if not better than the business version. With the business version been more expensive but the only real difference been the level of support.

Not saying you are wrong. There might be compromises, I just don't think the price difference will have much, if any bearing on the final specs of the Quest 3.

What I think they will do is make the Quest 3 as good as it can possibly be. And I think they will sell it at a loss, or at cost. I genuinely think this is the make or break headset for Meta. This has to be a headset that people want to use and it has to be a headset that people with Quest 2's and older will want to upgrade to. And by the leaks so far, it is going to be at least twice as fast as the Quest 2 and half the weight. That's pretty impressive, if true. They are supposedly making a huge push with game developers to have titles ready for the Quest 3 on release.

I think Meta are going all in on the Quest 3, in both hardware and software. I really do.

They do seem to be pitching Quest 3 as a slightly more expensive enthusiast headset. Makes me wonder if they'll ship with Pro controllers.

If it doesn't ship with those then it could be approaching or exceeding the Quest Pro price point if you add in a better headstrap, pro controllers and charging dock as optional extras.

That's probably what will happen. Or you know the rumours of a cheaper headset in 2024? Well, maybe the Quest 3 will have Pro controllers, but the cheaper headset in 2024 won't, the cheaper headset will probably have worse lenses etc. I can't imagine that they will be able to make the cheaper headset less powerful though. It's got to be able to run the same games as the Quest 3.

I don't see developers abandoning the q2, there's too many of them. 20 million headsets. Wouldn't surprise me if the cheap headset has the same SOC as the q2. Flood the market with a very cheap headset that has an already large library. Pancake lenses to help reduce the size, but otherwise similar to the q2.

I don't know what's going to happen with developers and the Quest 2. I think for a while developers will cater for both. But, If we are going to take the next step in VR development we need more powerful headsets. And it's now at the stage where proper triple A titles are needed, that will look good with the pancake lenses and improved screens.

It's going to be painful and there are going to be lots of complaints, as usual, but, I think it will be a mistake if they make games backwards compatible with the Quest 2.

But AAA games need AAA sales, and that means q2 numbers. Or of course the cheap headset is actually on the same cheap as the q3. If they manage that, I would imagine people will be more willing to sell on their q2s. Though who'd buy a 2nd hand q2 when the QCheap is available?

I agree, but, it's a chicken and egg situation. The quest 2 simply does not have the power to make the Triple A games that people expect these days. Good Graphics, engaging story etc. etc.

Meta will hope that nobody buys a second hand Q2!!

Totally agree. One of the reasons the Quest Pro has so little software catering for it specifically is because it's so new and has few sales compared to Quest 2.

Look at what happened when the Quest 2 launched. Very few games had specific Quest 2 support and it took a long while for developers to start catering to the higher Quest 2 specs and even longer to release Quest 2 only games.

The games will have to be backward compatible with Quest 2 for some time to come. That's especially true now Quest 2 is launching in China

As a Quest 2 owner i think i will wait for the Quest 3, i much prefer just enjoing a nice upgrade from my current hardware rarther than worry about having to have the best of the best, the grass is always greener for me its just better to enjoy any upgrade from where i am now.
