Am looking at getting one of these but have found a few different versions of it. Two have 512mb GDDR3 ram - but one has Zalman cooling and the specs say it runs faster than the same card without Zalman. Does Zalman make a difference?

Depends, look at the specs, if they have the same clock/memory speed they are the same apart from the cooler, all of them are the same though except some come with different bios's that bump the clock/memory up and some have better coolers. But a cooler wont make a card run faster, just cooler.

I think you should get this instead. 2600XT is old news. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-172-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=708

There are others on the same page http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=708.

The first link is not as fast as the pre OC HIS card but it is £20 cheaper and an easy overclock will see you up to those speeds of the higher priced card I imagine.

In fact I've just had a look on the site and this absolutely destroys all of the cards mentioned. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-081-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=416

It's only £18 dearer than the HD3650 but much, much faster.

Thanx. The HD3850 is tempting but out of budget. Have found a 3650 at a better price elsewhere. Am waiting for comfirmation that it's the DDR3 model before I buy.

I don't game very much and need the card for photo editing and HD. Will be video editing eventually but I'm told quad core would be better for that (I have dual AMD 4000+ at the moment)

Yes, you are correct. A quad is the one part you want for video editing. Also if you're not gaming then the 3650 will be the better card to go for. It's brilliant at HD. It's just a shame that you can't get the 3850 as it has much better specs for not much more :(. That would render games a lot better and still have the wonderful features for HD.

Will do some serious looking around for prices then. Or sell a part of my body.

Btw I have a 400Watt power supply. Do you know if this would be an issue with the 3850?

:D Self prostitution and be your own pimp?.

Do you know the 12v rails for the PSU?.

It's the only way to go, what with the credit crunch an'all.

:D

What are you talking about you mad scotsperson?;);)

I'm not so mad. I just didn't explain myself very well :o.

When it comes to PSU's then Fire Wizard is the better person to keep you right as it seems as if it's his speciality ;).

On the side of your PSU there should be a sticker that shows you the specifications of this component. The 12v rails (12v1 and 12v2) show 20 amps each and that's what information I was wanting.

It's better giving Fire Wizard your PSU model name as it's not just down to the amps. With your PSU being at 400w it's needed to see how much wattage has been given to the 12v rails.

Edit: Just seen your post and done a very quick check over the first 10 links in Google. On one of the links (can't post it here) the forum members are saying that the manufacturer isn't very good and has been known to take out components when failing. This was for a different model than yours mind you but it's from the same manufacturer. Fire Wizard will be able to help you more than I can though.

Thanks for your help J.D.:) It was more the fact that you mentioned graphics cards I don't have ;);)

Hahahahahaha :D No problem. I just noticed the X1900XTX reply . I was speaking to someone about the X1900XTX and their name is similar to yours "adam1v" :o. I was posting quite a bit yesterday and must have got mixed up lol.

You talked about getting the 2600XT, I then advise you on getting the HD3650, then a little while later I say that :D. What a dope I am lol.

Plenty of folk have advised me to get the HD3650 over the 2600XT saying it doesn't run any better than the 2600XT but it is cooler.

Have found an HIS HD 2600XT 512MB GDDR3 going for £42 (brand new), or a HD3650 512MB GDDR3 for £55 - also brand new.

The psu is a DEER DR8400BTX

Hello almichev, I have had a look on Google to try and find the specifications of the power supply unit that you have but unfortunately I can't seem to find any relevant information. Is there any chance you could post a picture of the specifications of your power supply unit please - It should resemble the picture that J.D has already posted.

Thank you. :)

Hello almichev, thanks for the picture. :)

Now, to give you a rough idea of the power consumption of your system:

The ATI Radeon HD3850 Pro consumes around 100 watts which equates to 9 amps. Now, the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000 will consumes around 65 watts which equals to 6 amps. Then, if we add a couple of hard drives in rated at one amp each and then some for the extra headroom, the above system is going to draw around 19 amps on the +12Volt rail.

The power supply that you have is a dual rail unit with the +12V1 rail being able to provide 14 amps and the +12V2 rail being able to provide 13 amps. Now, since you can't load up both rails to their maximum simultaneously, you will have a power supply unit that will be able to deliver around 22 amps. I'm sorry I can't give you an exact rating of how much your power supply unit can provide on the +12Volt rail - I have had a look around the internet but unable to find any relevant information.

Now, whilst the power supply unit that you have, providing it can deliver at least 20 amps on the +12Volt rail, will probably run your system fine, I am very concerned about the manufacturer of your unit. I can't say I have heard of the manufacturer of your power supply and it looks to me that they make very generic power supplies. So, based on that and not knowing exactly how much your unit can provide on the +12Volt rail, I personally wouldn't recommended running a card such as the ATI Radeon 3850 Pro on the power supply you currently have and would highly advise you to buy a new power supply from a well known manufacturer. :)
