Question about adjusting CPU fan speeds using motherboard controls

I'm trying to make my system run a bit quieter, so I've turned down all my chassis fans manually, but this isn't an option with my CPU fans. I have this cooler:

So I assumed I'd have to use my motherboard to adjust the fan speed (my motherboard is an Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z). So I've been into Asus Fan Xpert and changed my CPU fan settings from 'disabled' (i.e. 100% all the time) to 'Standard' (i.e. 20-100% depending on temperatures).

However, this doesn't seem to have had any effect on the fan speed at all. Both of my CPU fans are still running at 2000 rpm. What am I missing here?

Do you have PWM fans? No. :)

You have 3-pin fans like myself, these can only be controlled by voltage. Go into your motherboard BIOS, check PC Health Status for fan speed control, if it has an option to set for PWM or Voltage, choose voltage. You should be able to choose PWM values in there for voltage.

It is PC Health Status on my Gigabyte board, may be under something else on an Asus.

I don't have that option on my board. However, I have read that if I plug the CPU fans into chassis headers I will be able to change speeds then. Might try that.

That's a shame, what chassis do you have? You can buy 7v adapters for fans or a fan controller as a last resort. :)

Sounds odd that it doesn't work on your board properly, as it does list in the specs that it works with Fan Xpert2, have you tried resetting BIOS to defaults and using it after? After watching a video it seems it should just work, regardless of which header you use.
