Is it possible to have, for example, my headphones playing audio from program a, while my TV (connected via hdmi) plays audio from program b? Separately of course, so they don't interfere with each other.

I can't seem to get past the Windows setting for having 1 audio device working at a time. I'm sure back in XP you could run simultaneous playback devices.

Is there some software I need, or is it this possible within Windows somehow?

It depends on the software itself, if it allows you to to select which audio device to output. Check the sound settings in the software you're using to see if they have the option.

Yeah as Orcvader has said it depends on the software. Foobar2000 and MPC, for example, let you choose the output device. So you could have MPC running audio through the HDMI audio device, and have Foobar2000 playing music out of your sound card.

But yeah you won't see audio device selection in Firefox nor many video games unfortunately.

Searching around and found this, first comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/software/comments/3f3em6/is_there_a_alternative_to_chevolume/
