Hi all, I recently bought myself a Lumix TZ10. I know next to nothing when it comes to cameras so I was hoping to use the TZ10 to learn since it has auto as well as some manual modes.

I tested out the camera and the pictures I take are quite noisy but I am using the maximum setting of 12Mp. Will lowering this result in better quality pictures?

More pixels will give better quality technically.
Take a read at this:

Fairly short read but covers the basics.

Noise is related to the ISO. The shots you've taken are probably low light? therefore the camera is bumping up the ISO in order to achieve a faster shutter speed. Higher the ISO, the more noise you'll get.

The iso setting is on auto. But will shooting at 5 or 8Mp give better quality than 12Mp?

It will likely give better perceivable quality at pixel level with regards to noise but won't look as good in print (when all 5 8 and 12mp can be compared at the same size, NOT 100% zoom - something pretty much all noise comparisons fail to take into account).
