Question about eyes

So how come then when I close just one eye, why doesn't the world go 2D instead of looking the same with just a smaller field of view? :p

Your brain processing the image as 3D is not the same thing as depth perception from two images. It's the difference between watching a movie in 2D and 3D. Inb4 "3D is crap anyway".

Doesn't have anything to do with range finding, your vision overlaps basically at the end of your nose, there's no need to go cross eyed at any range,

We are ALWAYS cross eyed at all ranges, it's a nessecity of human binocular vision.

Think about it. We have two eyes a few inches apart. So if those two eyes are ever pointing at the same object, ie. when you're looking at something, they are always going to be crossed inwards, more so if its a close object or very slightly if its a far object.

The reason you cant manage it (without some sort of serious head injury :p) is because there is no mechanism to look outwards. Our eyes are basically calibrated to be always looking inwards to a certain degree.

When we make our eyes go inwards, we are basically imitating what our eyes naturally do when we want to focus in on something a few inches away from our face. When you look at the moon for example, your brain is still wired to keep your eyes pointing "inwards", just not to the same degree as when you're looking at something close to you.

Am I the only one reading through this thread wondering why everyone is saying "boss-eyed" when it's actually "cross-eyed"... Y'know, because your eyes cross?

From the OED...

boss-eyed, adj.

Etymology: Compare boss v.3, boss-shot n.

dial. and slang.

Having only one good eye; squint-eyed, cross-eyed. Also fig. oblique, crooked, one-sided.

1860 J. C. Hotten Dict. Slang (ed. 2)
1882 E. L. Chamberlain Gloss. West Worcs. Words, Boss-eyed, squinting.
1890 J. S. Farmer Slang, Boss, to miss one’s aim; to make such a shot as a boss-eyed person would be expected to make. Boss-shot is a common phrase.
1898 Eng. Dial. Dict. (at cited word), The horse shied and we ran up against the gate-post, and knocked the step of the cart all boss-eyed.
1959 I. Opie & P. Opie Lore & Lang. Schoolchildren xi. 214 It is unlucky for a cross-eyed woman to look at you… When somebody who is boss-eyed goes by you spit on the ground.

No.

What about the apache pilots that can apparently look at different things with each eye?

H4x.

Try this:
1. Extend your arms in front of you with your hands a few feet apart.
2. Ball your firsts, but keep your index finger on each hand extended, pointed inward toward each other.
3. Close your hands together so that the ends of each finger meet exactly aligned.

It should be pretty easy.
Now, try and do the same thing with one eye closed. You should find that you cant do it in one movement because your brain can't perceive how far in front each hand is and thus cant bring them together to meet accurately.

This makes absolutely no sense at all. Ofcourse our eyes have a mechanism to look outwards - otherwise we'd never be able to look to the side.

I think what you're trying to say is in binocular vision the eyes will always be convergent to some degree.

.

wel there is you can loo kleft and right. so the muscles can be told to do that, its just a case of if anyone is able to move thier eyes independently of each other (which i doubt as it would probably take a lot of effort just to focus if you had to do it manually)

Boss eyed means one good eye... hence it's the boss eye.

this thread is about cross eyes or wonky eyes
.

fail

Nice idea, but see #30.

1890 J. S. Farmer Slang, Boss, to miss one’s aim; to make such a shot as a boss-eyed person would be expected to make. Boss-shot is a common phrase.

Boss ... 2. A short-sighted person; also one who squints. 3. A miss, blunder. ... As verb ... (2) to miss one's aim, make such a shot as a boss-eyes person would be expected to make. Boss-shot, a shot that fails of its mark.

So basically "boss-eyed" is an all encompassing term for broken eyes, whereas cross-eyed is a specific type of broken :p

Still doesn't make sense though, you don't go shooting, end up taking out a small tree instead of a deer, and then turn to your mate and say "like a boss"...

I could still do it, maybe because humans have proprioception
