Hi all,

Firstly, before I raise my question, I'd like to apologise if this has been answered before / is blatantly obvious / is blatantly stupid.

1. I've been interested in the iphone, but I'm really against the prospect of getting an 18 month contract. After some browsing around, I realised that, unless I'm wrong, it's possible to buy the iphone from apple uk, and simply not activate it with itunes and hence not be bound into a lame 18 month contract with o2. Is this correct?? Will I just end up with a £270 toy that does nothing?
2. There are websites out-there that offer unlocking services for the iphone. I'm not interested in using the handset with another network - o2 is fine. What I am interested in doing is activating the phone and using it on a pre-existing 12 month O2 unlimited-data contract. Is this possible?

In summary, I want to buy an iphone from apple's website, not activate it, do some online jiggery-pokery and end up with an usable iphone that will function with my current O2 unlimited data contract.

Is this possible?

Thanks a lot!!

Has the iphone (UK 1.1.2) been unlocked to all networks or just for use with other O2 sims.

Yeah thats possible, iPhones can be unlocked to o2 sims only so far, and its likely in the future that will be fully corrected. But by doing this, you're putting yourself at risk of bricking the iphone when you may need to upgrade at a later point. The only half way decent legitimate way would be to get a real sim free iphone from europe, and use that over here with your o2 card. That would cost more than £270 i think, after importing and slight inital premium too unfortunately...
