right im not sharp on this subject and i dont know much about the TV's but i just have a question about something that is bugging me.

my dad recently got a TOSHIBA 37WLT66 for our living room. But whilst my xbox360 looks sexy on it  when watching the TV it seems very badly pixelated on some channels, where as on a normal TV it looks fine  i just dont get why this is when a hdtv is meant to be the dogs *ahem* can anyone help me out and tell me why this is or is the new TV buggered or can it be fixed.

also would it be the same on the Samsung 26" LE26R74BDX which im looking at gettin for my new bedroom when its all done.

Thanks in advance

unfortunatly lcd tvs show up bad reception ,dont forget the hd tv needs an hd input for it to show in hdtv, i.e an hd dvd player or skyhd ,the tv itself will not upscale.

the tv needs an hd input ,it will not take an ordinary tv channel that is not in hd and upscale (make it into hd,high res) same goes for dvd player, you need an hd dvd player.

so normal tv channels will always looks bad on a HDTV. so then whats the point in gettin one, i understand the sky hd will look great etc, but even with that box with all the normal chans like bbc1 etc look good or still badly pixelated (sp)

afaik pixelation is caused by bad reception/signal ,its one of the faults of lcd tv's ,if its a poor signal it will show,my normal channels look ok bbc1/2 itv etc but some of the freeview channels look dodgy.

It looks BAD because there is twice as many pixels on your hdtvs than normal sdtvs. Its got to guess and fill in the spare pixels so of course it wont look as good as a tv that is meant for standard definition.

Think of it like this,

The worse it looks the better your tv is lol comprende

Standard definition TV on an LCD will always look pants compared to CRT, mainly because CRT does a very good job at hiding how bad the signal is!

Nothing much you can do except tweak your picture settings a bit, and sit further back :p

its sorted now -you need to use an hd input, its what the lcd was made for, think of it as like converting a vcd to dvd -the source was crap so the dvd wont be any better.

no but im not on about a dvd player, im just on about watching normal tv, i know about the sky hd etc as we are planning on gettin one of them shortly but will normal TV ever become HD or will it always look crap on a HDTV

who knows when normal channels will be HD (unless someone works for the bbc/itv etc),perhaps when they switch off analogue tv ,tho i can still see it being a premium service even then,i dont think the bbc will give anything away free that they can milk first.

so can anyone justify a reason to get a HDTV then as the most watched channels in my house are BBC1 and ITV well thats what my mam & dad mostly watch.

hd sky,hd dvd,hd xbox 360 ,dont take this the wrong way but perhaps more research should have been done on what they/you watch the most before the purchase.

No, its pretty much a waste of time at the moment. Exactly the reason why i didnt bother with an HD plasma, and my projector can do both.

wasnt me who bought it though its my dad ;) i just wanted to ask these questions cos like i said to him i think its a daft purchase and now n then he moans about itv etc been a crap picture, this is why i came on here to ask about it. im gettin my tv because i will get a hd dvd player cos i dont really watch tv but it will be mainly for my xbox and to hook the pc upto :)

FYI

I believe an SD source will be upscaled by an LCD panel to its natural res (usually 1280*768 or 1366*768) although it will still look pretty naff - especially on 32" or larger TV's

It also depends on what the individual manufacturer's tech inside is whether the signal itself is manipulated before it getting to the panel (like Philips PixelPlus system which isnt really upscaling as far as I understandit)

I am one of the lucky few on the HD freeview being run in London for the next 6 months or so ( it officially runs until Xmas / New Year I believe) and it is a marked improvement but being a trial still has some glitches but this wont be available at a guess for most for quite some time ( My personal opinion is that OfCom and the broadcasters will try and move Heaven to have something in place for Olympics in 2012)

HD resolution Televisions certainly do upscale. If they did not and displayed pixels at a ratio of 1:1 you would have an image that did not fill the screen. It would be a rectangle in the middle.
