question about hdtv

perhaps i got my terminology wrong, what i meant was that an hd tv will not turn a normal signal into an hd picture,if it did there would be no need for hd sky or hd dvd.

Nothing can turn a SD picture into a true HD picture, not just an LCD TV.

the poster and some ppl seem to think that getting an hd tv will automatically give them a better (hd) picture which it wont because you need an hd input to the tv afaik this why why they say 'hd ready' ,this is the point i have been trying to make all thro this post and again afaik that is correct, pluging a normal freeview box or a normal dvd player in an hd tv will not give you pictures in hd.(i may have used the incorrect word by saying 'upscalling' but it was the best i could think of for going up in resolution)

i knew that to get HD i would need a sky HD or HD dvd player, all i asked was why a supposed "better tv" doesnt give a better picture on normal tv ie bbc and itv, but now i have my answer

I think what pugster is trying to say is TV's don't upscale very well, like FFDshow or whatever it's called. Tv's just strech to suit the native res, rather than run multi pass filters and antialias etc...

Also, worth noting is that the Toshiba WLT66 is an absolutely fantastic screen when fed with a true HD signal.

However, it's internal scaler is quite poor. I have set many of them up and never been able to get good results when paired with something like Sky Digital (SD).

i guess that sounds better :D ,its only over the last week that ive gotten my first lcd and had to look into it myself for the same reasons of the thread starter, getting an a321 has now turned into needing/getting an hd dvd and sky hd so i can see the difference.

Thats what the tv license is for

thats the whole point of what i said ,it wont be free, the tv licence will go up or it wll be an add on package that you pay extra for,i dont want to start a licencing debate but personally i think i should be able to pay for what i want, not be forced to pay for something i dont.

Remember a fair chunk of the licensing fee is also being used to help with the digital roll out, something that the BBC would like to see funded directly from central government.

As too the scaling problems, it is possible to get external upscalers which may do a much better job of scaling the picture than the kit inside the TV itself.
