Question about modifying my air filter...

Hi all, I was going to stick one of those washable K&N increased airflow panel filters in my car to see if it helps with the horrific throttle response (even if only slightly) and if not, well... I sort of want one anyway, 1HP is a 2% power gain (:D), but there are none available for my engine code. (there are filters for the 12V AZQ engine and the 6V BMD engine, but none for the 6V AWY engine)

The air filter in my car has a rubber/plastic guide around the outside which helps locate it in the air-box on top of the engine as seen here - http://images.esellerpro.com/2577/I/279/58/122VG0010NEW.JPG

My question to you is if there would be any issue with me cutting the old paper filter out of this rubber/plastic guide, purchasing a K&N performance filter for a different model of car which has length and width dimensions in excess of what I need, and then trimming it down and attaching it in the rubber/plastic guide?

There are induction kits available for my engine, but I want to use my original air-box/engine cover.

It will make no difference whatsoever, do you actually have a problem with throttle response or are you expecting too much from a Polo?

Explain how you see this problem with throttle response.
 
The second one. It won't cost much so if it will fit and won't cause any issue I'll just do it. :p

With the 'induction roar' I can be marginally happier as I get overtaken by lorries. :p
 
cant say iv honestly noticed any better response with a k&n or any extra noise. however, with one fitted in my ibiza 1.4 (think the engine code was bbz), it caused stalling and engine light coming on all the time.

oil from the filter was messing up the TB
 
I wouldn't waste your time (and money), it won't make a blind bit of difference. Just save up for the better car that you keep saying you want!
 
That should work if you seal it in the rubber gasket properly, if it falls away from it then you will have gaps which could potentially let some bigger crud in, but unlikely.

But you would be better off sticking to the standard filter and drilling some holes in your airbox, that you will get your induction noise and it can improve throttle response, but on your 6v engine, its unlikely as its technically hampered. :p
 
green cotton filters are better than K&N ones
if your going to keep the car for many years to come, it will never need replacing, just clean it every so often and they are better than stock filters
 
Back in the day a mate was telling me about another mate who'd modified his filter by fitting a pipe across it.

Panel filter would do sod all. If you're going to do it at least run a full induction kit and ditch the factory airbox.
Although the gains will probably still be minimal on such a car.
 
I'd love to see someone give Acme a pack of cable ties, a few rolls of duct tape, some basic tools and a weekend with his car.

I reckon he'd turn it into a Phaeton :p
