Question about new CPU... small scuff marks

I have just bought a new 6800K and although I don't think it's been used, it does have a small 1cm long faint scuff mark just above the middle centre and quite a few other marks on the surface, including 4 odd straight 1-2mm vertical lines... pic below, not deep scratches or anything, but I'm sure I've never seen a CPU like this before. It was OEM, but is this normal and will it potentially affect performance? Should I return for replacement?

Well I don't think it's been used... but condition isn't what I'd expect for sure. I don't think this is acceptable, even for OEM. OEM doesn't mean scuffed up!

where did you buy it from? OcUK?

if so then maybe do a post in the CS section and see what they say

Unfortunately not, and this is a cautionary tale about buying from those Scammers in Bolton. They have told me it's perfectly acceptable for a CPU, and only if it's genuinely faulty would they accept a return under anything else than my simple right to return under CCR... which of course I will be doing (at my expense, but at least it's only a small item). I only bought from them as I was buying something else that OCUK didn't sell... I rarely use them, and from now on will do my utmost never to again!! I will rebuy from OCUK (it's actually on offer now anyway which is a bonus), lesson learned!!

Pretty sure we were given a reason for scuff marks (by an OcUK staff member) in here before.
Can't remember what it was off the top of my head, but I'd not be remotely concerned if my CPU looked like that... :D

Only take the hit, if you will ultimately save money.

Well I can get Retail for same price as I paid for this OEM, so I'm sending this back. Won't cost much. I've had many OEM CPU's over the years, never seen one like this. Maybe it will be OK, I just don't condone sending such an expensive item out looking like this. Slippery slope.

LOL these marks are from the machine that puts the cpus into the trays for shipping. Nothing to worry about at all.

You will also find that some retail cpus come with them as well.

Oddly I bought a i3 6100 brand new (still sealed) and it had a minor mark on the surface abit like yours when I opened it. I was slightly taken aback as of all the CPU's i've bought i've never had a brand new one with marks.

I decided that as I couldn't feel them they where only superficial and when under a cooler I wouldn't notice them.

Interesting that other people have had the same issue with new CPUs.

You can tell if a modern CPU from Intel is used because on the protruding IHS sections on the sides where the hold down bar(s) in the socket lock down, if the CPU is used, there will be little indentations cut into the surface of the edges of the IHS in the aforementioned sections. If there are no marks there, then the CPU has never been locked into a socket, and has never been used.

I personally doubt there is any reason to think the CPU is used.
