If you buy a monitor which you can swivel between portrait and landscape orientation, is it Windows that needs to recognise the change has happened and thus change your screen resolution? Or something snazzy regarding the graphics card?

I have two machines which share my monitor, an XP and and Vista system. How would these two fair with the change in orientation?

Thanks...

no you would need a g-sensor in the mointor.

OK...

Also, regarding manually changing resolution when changing orientation. I'm fairly sure, once Windows has booted, it only offers the appropriate resolutions for attached monitor.

ie: If I we to change monitor, it wouldn't (immediately at least) detect the new resolutions available.

How is this any different when you've swivelled the orientation?

Or are you expected to close down Windows. Change orientation. Reboot Windows?

You just change your res but the other way around. Why are you going for portrait mointors?

OK, I'll take your word for it. But If I were to have a 1920x1080 monitor attached to my machines. And unplugged it and attached a 1080x1920 monitor. I don't think the new resolution would be available. At least not without some faffing about. I recon I'd have to reboot for Windows to detect the new resolution?!

As why a portrait monitor - Just intrigued how it works...

There you go...

Once you change the orientation, the available resolutions change (ie. from 1920x1080 to 1080x1920)

Oh! So Windows detects the monitor can change orientation, so gives you the appropriate option.

There's a good change Vista will do this. I wonder if XP will!? And indeed with this still work thru a VGA connection (which is what I use) rather than a digital one!

Using VGA over DVI/HDMI is just silly if you have the option to pick either it basically can only be an improvement, not necessarily one you can see but it certainly wont be worse.

Anyhow, it's not your cable or monitor that need to 'support' it. It's simply your videocard calculating everything sideways. Quite sure Windows XP has the option as well (at least with an intel card.. which student has done the good old ctrl+alt+arrow key trick).

It's really not complicated!

It doesn't detect that the monitor "can change orientation", it's just a setting that you can select! You can do it on any screen. Give it a go....

I've done tests on my current (22") monitor and can't see any difference between VGA and HDMI.

The real reason for VGA is a KVM switch to use a single monitor/keyboard/mouse across the two previously mentioned machines. Works beautifully!
