Question about Rovers

Hi, My wife just got a new second hand car its a 98 Rover 420 SDi Turbo with 77k otc

anyway it just says 400 on the back any idea why?
ive looked on Google and the older ones say 414 etc but not the newer ones

Cause rover didnt want it to

go to a scrappy and get a 420 badge if you want one!

Same reason my Fiesta doesn't have a "Fiesta 1.4 Zetec with fuel injection and plastic inlet manifold" badge I guess.

It's a Rover 400, so they put a 400 badge on it.

Does it really matter? Maybe the 80 yo+ client base found the naming scheme difficult to grasp.

Probably to simplify the build process. That and some people with the bargain basement model don't want to tell the world.

It was supposed to have 420BHP but the tolerances were too hard to maintain so they settled on 400BHP, hence the '400'.

They couldn't do that either but they kept quiet about that bit

It came from the 200 I think. Something to do with the 214, when it was released, was more powerful than the Escort 1.6 at the time... But Rover realised people would still buy a 1.6 over a 1.4 because big numbers apparently = better amongst the general public. So they just put '200' on the back, and likewise with the rest of their range.

I thought it was optional, you could pick whether you wanted the engine size stated on your badge or not.

Similar to the delete badge option that BMW have, only theirs removes the whole thing, not just the engine size.
