Question about speaker placement

below is a picture of my current speaker position and where I want to move the speakers to.

I wanto do this to both save desk space and ease cable management.

with the speakers being behind me, is that less desirable at all?

Yes it is. Only place your rear left & right speakers where the red speakers are, or if you face the bookshelf.

because I can't notice much difference when i just face the other way.

Will mess the soundstage up a bit I'd have thought.

You'll lose all the stereo imaging if the speakers are behind you. Fine for a bit of background music but not good for serious listening or gaming.
