Question about Steam

I have a fairly simple question. I've got a bunch of games on disk, and I was wondering if there was any way to get them into steam as it's far more convenient, I don't have to change disks, and steam keeps them up to date for me.

A while back I bought CS:S and DOD:S and they came on a disk, I open steam and type the serial number in and then steam will proceed to download those games, meaning I never actually need the disk. Can I do the same with the other games that I have, such as C&C3, Crysis, COD4?

I know there's an option at the bottom of the steam window to 'add a non-steam game', but as far as I can tell all that does is creates a shortcut in the steam window, which is virtually useless. Anyway, answers on a post card please, cheers in advance.

the option to ad disk games to steam is "activate a product on steam" but it only works with certain games like source games, ut3, dark messiah and maybe a few others.

That's a helpful link and it answers my question. None of the games I have are in that list. I was wanting it for COD4 as well as Command & Conquer 3/Kane's Wrath. :(

One way around that would be to wait till the games are on a weekend offer on steam, buy them again and sell the physical copies you have hoping to recover the cost :)
