I went round to a friend who has a 30D to give it a go before I buy one. The only thing I didnt like over the 350D was the setting knob on the left. It didnt turn as smoothly or as easily as the 350D does. Is this usual as I found it quite annoying?

What setting knob are you talking about?

Edit - Just checked my 30D and I know what knob you are talking about - Ignore me, I'm tired.

Without meaning to disrespect but thats a really dumb reason to put a negitive onto the EOS30D

The functions dial is stiff so you dont accidentally shift it into a new program.

Most of the time you will probably shoot it in either "Av" or "Tv" then "Manual" and "Program".
In a days shoot I would be supprised if you moved it more than 5 times a day.
I only ever bounce between Av and manual most of the times.

If this really bothers you then I would advise you to stick to entry level dslrs

i forget the last time i changed mode on my 20d, its mostly stuck in manual

infact i had to look at it to remember which dial your talking about

its definatly not a major issue, go and get yourself a 30d :)

Stating you mean no disrespect then saying 'thats a really dumb reason' hardly excuses you! In 15 months of 350D ownership I've never accidentally shifted the dial on the 350D. Its easy to opperate but not something I've ever moved without wanting too. My comment was regarding a comparison between models and IMHO the 350D has a superior dial to that of the 30D. Its slightly larger and has a better movement where-as the 30D is smaller and isnt as easy to turn. I said it was the only thing I didnt like, which again IMHO is hardly a reason to call imply that I'm 'really dumb'

While I'm here. What kind of comment is "If this really bothers you then I would advise you to stick to entry level dslrs" Now this is pathetic! I ask a valid question about a camera I'm thinking of purchasing and get told this! What the hell does my single question/comment have to do with entry dslr's and how is your comment constructive, in any way? You either got out of bed the wrong side or the respect I had for you and your talent in this forum was greatly misplaced, as you clearly have nothing constructive to say.

To the others who have replied - I understand that it wont be changed all that much, just wanted to know if the 'stiffness' was a one off or a 30D thing, which I'm happy to live with :)

It's not a design flaw for the stiffness, it's a designed to be like that. The old EOS 30 film camera even has a lock on it, you need to press down on the little metal "button" on the wheel for it to move. It really removes any accidental shift between modes.

I believe that this is a design feature of all XXD and the 5D cameras in the Canon Digital range so far. The 1 series cameras are are another matter (but then this is not what you asked).

I never said I thought you were dumb. I thought your reason was.

Personally if you dont agree with my comment then keep it to yourself and don't exploit me as something I am not. There is no point me saying something that may have been stated once or more in previous replies. You got my answer to your question (which explains why the dial is the way it is) along with some other words that seems to of clearly upset you.

I am not beginning an argument on something so daft and meaningless so don't fuel your own fire.

Once again, the dial on the 30D is stiff and smaller since it is a feature that is hardly going to be used by the majority of users of this model camera.
(You say in 15 months you have never moved yours. Well manufacturers have to design things for the less intelligent of the crowd so although you take care that your settings are not moved does not mean that everyone else will follow suit)

You also need to consider the type of photography you do. If are a landscape photographer and your DSLR spends it's life on a tripod (an extreme example I admit) then the chance of the dial being turned by accident is slim but if you are climbing in Wales (as I have been) with your camera around your neck the dial can get turned. I've had it happen once; even with the "stiff" dial on the 30D.

If I don't agree with a comment made its my right to form an opinion and reply in the same way you made an opinion and replied to my post.

I appreciate your answer but clearly (as I'm sure others would agree) your other words are no more than an attemp to provoke a reaction. IMHO your suggesting I should stick with a amature DSLR as I don't understand one of the 30D's features, when all I was doing was asking a simple question, which others have answered in a far less derogratory (sp) way. In no way I'm I exploiting you, just responding in the way I feel your post warrents.

I love the way this forum tolerates newbies and how the members always like to offer a helping hand. Again, your post seemed more like brand snobbers, a bit like an old Skoda driver who is thinking about buying a BMW but doesnt like the way the door opens!

Thank you for your post, and in all seriousness I don't have and hard feelings towards you. I'm just annoyed at the tone of your post and felt I needed to respond, as I'm sure others would have also.

I really was not hinting you dont know how to work a camera. I would be happy for you to get a 30D but all I was doing was defending such a great model in that it has been designed almost perfectly and there really isnt anything to stop anyone getting this camera.

I dont look down on anyone on this forum or anyone that wishes to get into photogaphy as I enjoy to take photos as much as I do to advice anyone into getting into it or a little help along the way.

Water under the bridge. Im not gonna say anything else on the matter as It will just go on and on forever.

Johnny :) Cheer up, its the new year :p
