I recently bought a new car with no spare wheel. Only put 1000 miles on the clock so far. I woke up today to find a flat tyre and the RAC came out and did a temp fix with some squirty blue stuff in a tube but the repair chap suggested getting a new tyre fitted within 40 hours as it wasn't possible to do a proper repair of the tyre as the screw he pulled out was too close to the inner tyre wall. These standard Michelin tyres are £120 each so before I get a new one and get a spare too can someone tell me if front/rear wheels both use the same tyres?

They might be different sizes between front and rear depending on the car.
This is very easily checked by looking at the brand, model and size of the tyres currently fitted, all of which will be clearly marked on the sidewall.
As for a spare - if your car has space for one, it'll probably only be for a space saver. Best bet for sizing that is to check on manufacturer accessories site to see what they sell for your car.

You want the tyres to ideally be the same (as in the same exact type from the Manufacturer and the same exact model and size) across the axle. This means the same two tyre types on the front, and then the same two tyre types on the rear.
EDIT: As in, the fronts can be one brand and the rear another if you like. Ideally all 4 the same but not always possible.

There should be a placard in the frame of the driver's door with the wheel specs and recommended tyre pressures. Sometimes it will have info on the spare i.e. if the boot can take a full size or only space saver as well but that isn't very common.
Occasionally the sticker will be on the inside of the glove box or behind one of the sun visors but that is less usual.

Would help a little bit if he mentioned what car he has.... But then you don't know what previous owners have fitted, so with way he needs to get off his arse and go and look, not rocket science...
It reads to me like he's looking for the correct size spare in the manual, which he won't determine by looking at the empty space in his boot

I've got that info now thanks but also need to find out if the wheel gap space can take a 205/55/R16 Tyre. I'll call the main dealer. They should know all the specs and maybe they can sell me a new owners manual.
