Have just gotten my New Toshiba laptop which comes with windows 7 installed and all the toshiba crap that comes with it. I have my own copy of windows 7 home, can i use my this windows 7 dvd and use the cd key from the bottom of the laptop to install windows 7, or wont that work??

Hi, looking to do much the same and at a guess i dont think you can, i believe the cd key is only for the orginal disk, but not sure.
What laptop did you get might be getting a toshiba myself with windows 7 home on and would also want to get the crap of and put my windows 7 ultimate on it.
PM me i can help you out with windows 7 (all versions) for a good price

I got the tosh satalite pro L650 165, Well the dvd i have of Windows 7 is home edition and this is the same version that has been installed on the laptop, i thought i would just be able to grab the cd key of the bottom of my laptop and use that to activate my windows 7 dvd, i thought this would work as they are both home editions

If both versions are the same i.e both are oem and 64/32bit etc then as far as i know then they should work. But wait to see of anyone can confirm this for you.

Yeah you can use the serial key for a fresh install, so long as its the same 'flavour' if you like i.e a Home Premium key must be used for Home Premium. Though you can use said key for either 32 bit or 64 bit installation.

Use be sure to back up any drivers you need incase something goes wrong.

I'd really recommend using something like Acronis True Image if you have an external hard drive knocking around. You can clone your HDD onto the external, and then if anything does go wrong, you can restore it to the exact way it was before you touched it :)

This might help you out a little.

When I order a Dell laptop I always ask for the OS CD. They often charge for it on the site, even though the laptop comes with the OS installed, but you can call after receiving the laptop and get them to send the OS CD for free.

The OS version they send is vanilla and does not contain the junk you get installed on your laptop, so you'll be able to use your legal key on the legal OS.

I'd give Toshiba a call and see if they can post you the OS CD.

If you really wanted to check without loosing anything, you could install virtualbox and install your Windows 7 version onto a virtual computer then check if your key works.
