Question for parents

Let me get this straight - this first paragraph describes information you gave your insurance company that increased your premium? :-

The same happens for me to a lesser extent - £150. Another £150 if i declare that I'm married rather than living with partner. Another £50 is I say I'll park it on the drive rather than the street. Another £70 if I estimate it's value at what I bought it at (£7500 - From father in law) rather what I believe it is worth (£9500).

And the info below decreased it? :-

The following brings down my premium: Parking in a 'residential parking area'. Increasing it estimated value by £3000. Having my wife earn the no claims rather than me. Increasing annual mileage from 8000 to 10000. declaring that there is NO tracker installed.

I r confuzzled.

I know, tell me about it. Now every time I renew I fiddle about with every single variable that I can that won't land me in hot water if I claim. Most of the stuff above I found out from curiosity- obviously I can't actually change some of those things (without drastic measures) but if parking on the street rather than drivewaygives me a lower premium then I'll do it!

When my little girl was born I had a 3dr mk4 golf gt tdi.
It was ok, we got the pushchair in, being 3 door and a rear facing baby seat in the back it wasn't practical to have the seat passenger side as you couldn't get her into the seat. So I kissed the windscreen for about 9 months.

Since then I have traded in my golf for a vectra '06 plate and its big, comfortable and has more space than I need.

I like it and it fits my bikes in when the child isn't in :-)

You'll want back doors if you're taking them in and out of the car a lot, but you don't NEED them. We managed with a mini cooper with one, and a 5 door fiesta with 2 kids. A friend of ours struggles with 2 kids in an Octavia estate. Just try it out.

I have a 3 door A3 and while it definitely possible to get your kids in/out, it does become a massive PITA. Especially when it's raining, or you're in a car park.

Thanks for all the replies guys, to be honest I was expecting a lot of "we instantly bought a Picasso/Zafira/Scenic" but I'm pleasantly surprised to see a lot of very reasonable changes.

Personally I can see myself with an estate of some kind, mainly for transporting the dog everywhere without covering the back seats in a thick layer of fur and drool... Take the dog out of the equation and a saloon would do me fine, not a fan of hatchbacks.

Most saloons are horrible for everything that comes with a child though. So when you go looking, take a buggy / car seat and whatever else will be with you normally to test entry space into the boot.

Lol children.

A few years yet before I sign my life away, well 3-5ish currently pencilled in.

I want a Noble or Porsche before then, if I need to put the babyseat in then it can be cable tied to the rear plank spolier of cable tied into the rear cage of a GT3 RS.

Have I just woken up? :D

I had an Impreza with bucket seats when we were expecting our first child, I sold it for a ZR 160 with three doors. Fail.

When my daughter arrived, we (me & the ex) decided to buy a Nova 1.5TD :o as a direct replacement for the RS Turbo I had previously, it just about carried the pram & baby seat, not the most practical of choices so I sold it & bought a Mk II Granada 2.8i Ghia X (wonderful car, much missed) as the Nova (and Escort before it) was too small if you wanted to do any kind of trip that warranted luggage.

Roll forward a few years, I still had my daughter, but the girl I was with at the time had two lads from her previous relationship so we ended up with a Granada 2.9i Scorpio which was great (and the kids loved the electric rear seats & headphones in the back)

We changed the Scorpio for an e36 318i, split up a little while later, once I found myself single with just my daughter to cart around, I bought (as you do) an e38 7 Series!

We had a baby in September and we have both managed with 3 door cars up to now. This is down to the car base for the Maxi Cosi which is easy to snap lock in through the front access.

Now he's getting bigger and has moved to a standard car seat it's getting harder to climb into the back with him to put him in the car seat. We have recently ordered two new 5 door cars - a Focus and a 1 Series, which when we tested them were big enough for our requirements at the moment.

Over time this will probably change though, so in 3 years I'll probably get an A4 Avant to use as our main car.

We had a 3 door hatch and then changed it once my daughter was born with the help of my wifes aunt who bought the new car for us!

I very nearly got a S-Max as my next company car, basically because I also everynow and then have my disabled brother and my elderly mom with us. And having a higher car is easier all round. I quite like the Smax, the driving position is nice and the space is a god send, as for some reason the **** you have to cart round is redonkulus!!

The Smax was pretty expensive on the car scheme, and adults cant really use the rear most seats. In the end Ive gone for an Audi A4 Avant, but in 4 years when my child will be 4, I will get a MPV.Our baby is due in August, and aslong as I get to keep my MX5, I dont mind having a MPV.

That's plain ridiculous. I'd suggest carrying out a series of comparison quotes online because whoever you got that quote from regarding the premium being raised by £500 is quite obviously taking a huge amount of the proverbial out of you.

They were still the cheapest by far, but it was the difference between £1900 and £2400 :(

Haha, Admiral group?

I managed to tweak the following:

Increase car value by a couple of £k.
Change job title from Computer Engineer to Network Controller.
Park on the street (cheapest out of all the options).
No immobiliser (yes it's cheaper to insure with no immobiliser than with!)

And the strangest one:

Adding my mum on her own knocked off a few hundred.
Adding my stepdad on his own added a few hundred.
Adding both of them knocked off more than just adding my mum.

WTF?!

As far as I can tell, the method for decided insurance premiums is this:
