Question for Quest 2 Owners

So im currently in a very long wait for a 3080 and my PC is redundant while I play as I can't bring myself to play with my old 960 card. So I thought I'd take a punt and buy an Oculas Quest 2 after reading it doesn't need a pc. But I do have a few questions if people would help me out.

I did used to own a Vive which was obviously tethered to the computer. Am I likely to be disappointed with the graphics on the Quest when compared to the Vive? Its been a few years now and it's not a deal breaker. Just want to know if there's a big difference. Obviously once my GPU arrives I've read that I can play my old vr titles on the Quest. If tethered or linked to the computer do the graphics or experience improve any?

I've got a yearning to play onward, I already own it but thinking of getting it again for the quest but I've read that all the graphics have been dumbed down on it.

Many thanks in advance

The display Quest 2 when using the link cable or wireless using Virtual Desktop is way, way, better than the Vive. SDE is almost non-existent, and the image is more detailed. The main issue is that the image is compressed so it's a bit soft, and you can notice the compression in very detailed or dark scenes, but for the majority of titles it's a massive improvement.

Of course it's not just about image quality. There is more latency when using the Quest 2 (though is isn't that noticable when using the Link cable), and the Vive tracking is better, though the Quest 2 is the best inside-out tracking system on the market and is very good.

Oculus native apps are much downgraded graphically than PC, but the wireless freedom makes up for that, and Quest 2 is more capable so is getting graphical upgrades that put it closer to the PC.

Didn't they say that there is going to be a big update to link to improve the visuals? I wonder how much of a difference it will actually make if they put the effort in

I'm sure it can be improved. The latency is probably the biggest issue for games which need fast reaction times, but that could be improved by going to 90hz. I saw a video from a sim racer who says the Quest 2 link latency is quite noticable when racing (but there are other things which could affect latency like how good your graphics card is, or your USB chipset).

It's a shame that the Quest 2 doesn't support displayport over USB C.

I'm also waiting on a 3080 and got a quest 2,
Never owned a vr headset before so cant compare to any other,
My personal review so far is, it's ok, not amazing,
Using the link on a 1070 is hit and miss,
I've tried these games,
Minecraft, looks ok,
Elite dangerous, looks terrible,
Half life alyx, the best experience so far, looks good but not very sharp, I think this is the soft looking people referring to,
Project car 2, unplayable graphics wise, ps2 games look better,
I'm hoping the 3080 when it comes will help with these games, or a future link update
Games just for the headset and not for PCvr are ok but remined me of phone games, not a lot of depth and not graphically impressive,
Bit when you consider it's doing what it's doing wireless, it's a impressive bit of kit,
Beat saber is probably a perfect game for this headset,
Echo arena is also fun bit you can tell it struggles with the level of detail in the game

I tried Elite Dangerous on the Quest 2, and I thought that despite the softness of the image it looked better than running on my Index. Text was massively clearer due to much reduced SDE, and the text is pretty clear on the Index anyway.

Yeah text was ok bud, for me it was the texture quality,
Of the ship interior, and the star ports, all looked really low res,
Jumping out of supercruise to a star port and was met with a graphical mess, struggled to make out any detail etc until closer,
Didn't think elite was that demanding of a game so thought it would have looked better, but others mentioned vr it's not very well implemented

Thanks for all the answers guys. I guess using it standalone until my card finally arrives will be good enough. I'll just make sure to buy games especially made for the Quest until then

There's a ton of options with Elite to tweak the graphics. The out of the box VR experience is probably based on older headsets with low resolution, with tweaking you can make it look much better. Though I really do need to give Elite a proper try - the best test is to approach and dock with a space station. On Cv1 this was an aliased mess, but on the Index it's a lot better and you can see far more detail. It is also a massive performance hog.

I'm sure people play different games to me. I think ED looks amazing on the Quest 2 - leaps and bounds over my Rift CV1.

Yeah for £1000 I would expect a masterpiece on the index,
I tried and fiddled with setting, apart from in game and also tried the debug stuff, what else is there?

My first vr headset so I've nothing to compare to other than my desktop screen, and it is a million times worse than what that looks,
Maybe it's just my flagging 1070, what gpu are currently using?

I'm on a 1080ti at the moment with a 3960x Threadripper cpu.

Could just be my gpu then maybe,
At least this is what I'm hoping,
I would love to be able to play games like elite and racing sims in VR without feeling like I'm looking at a playstation 1 lol,
But I'm starting to wonder if I should have saved the money and got a g2 preorder in,
Shall know once the mythical 3080 arrives lol

Yeah, I think you have another problem. PCVR Games shouldn't look like Play station 1 games. Even native Quest 1 games don't look that bad.

The Index, Rift S, Reverb G2, Quest 2 won't look that much different, some will have better blacks, others less SDE but there isn't a night and day difference between any of the top headsets.

The Reverb G2 will have slightly less SDE and a little higher resolution(2160x2160 vs 1832x1920) than the Quest 2, but they will look very similar in games when the link gets improved. Just look at any of the through the lens videos.

What I mean is, If the graphics look like Playstation 1 graphics to you now on the Quest 2, It will still look like playstation 1 graphics with the Index or the Reverb G2.

Have you tried using Virtual desktop to play games? What Quest 2 games do you have? How do they look to you?

Even with the 1070 games shouldn't look like Playstation 1 games. Project Cars 2 and Elite Dangerous both have looked good on headsets worse than the Quest 2.

Have not tried virtual desktop, dont think my sky wifi router is 5ghz,
Quest games, I have beat saber, looks good,
Echo vr which seems to suffer from aliasing issues,
Death horizon reloaded, that looked like a ps1/2 game but I kind of expected that with it being a wireless game that's under a gig download,
I dont know mate sadly i have no previous headsets for reference,
Maybe I just expected to much,

Just watched a through the lens for project cars 2 on the rift s index and g2, I can confirm mine looks worse than the rift s, that g2 looked blooby impressive though

Well, The Rift S's resolution is 1280x1440 per eye. The Index is 1440x1600 per eye. The Quest 2 should look better than both even through the link cable.

Here is a video of Projects Cars 2 on the Oculus Quest using link cable. Does yours look even this good? The Quest 2 should look a lot better than this video.

If yours looks worse than this, than there is something else wrong. Maybe you are trying too high of settings? It's a very demanding game in VR.

I wish it looked anything as close to as good as that video, but is that not a desktop capture and not through the lens, did not watch it all just skipped through some bits, also see hes running a 2080ti mines a 1070
On my desktop monitor it looks amazing,
And yeah I've tried low and high setting, and the debug stuff,
My nephew is bringing his CV1 headset round tomorrow afternoon so I will at least have some sort of comparison between the two

Ah crap, I got the URL from the wrong video. There was one with a guy using the link and a 1070Ti, that's the one I meant to post.

So my Quest 2 arrived today and I have to say I'm impressed. I was kinda expecting a downgrade in graphics from the Vive I was used too. Admittedly its been 18 months since I last done any VR but fairly impressed. I've only spent a couple of hours playing Onward and Vader Immortal.

Only downsides for me is I will need the elite strap for extra battery capacity. Also it physically hurt my forehead. That might be a problem. Putting the glasses spacer helped a little but still hurt my head. Wondering if the Elite strap will help with this or not? Got a bit nauseous playing Vader Immortal but I think its a case of getting used to VR again.

Just really hope my 3080 turns up soon so I can use link and make the most of my VR library.
