Question for the forum on a possible new section...

In that case how are we supposed to differentiate between what isn't popular and what is but isn't posted about?
And there's the rub: if I want to get a new forum on cookery, or on books or whatever, I would need to make those threads knowing full well that they won't last long to start with. But then I guess you don't get anything out without putting effort in.
Would that be a 'general' forum, for discussion then?
:p

I was trying to describe more of a "quite interesting" forum that sits somewhere between GD and SC in tone. What's deemed interesting is decided by the mod/admin team.
First thoughts are - additional moderation, additional room for complaints when someone's thread doesn't get moved.

I'm keeping an open mind on this, but I'm not feeling it.
They're definitely understandable concerns. I think for a while you'd also get posts like "why is this thread here and not mine?" in those forums, but after a while we'd all get used to the system. As in everything else, the admin's decision is final -- if you don't like that a thread has/hasn't been moved then you just live with it.

I'm glad it's all being considered at least -- a lot of good threads die in GD just because of it's fast-moving, diverse nature.

I can see it now:

Post 1: Anyone read such and such a book?

Post 2: punch it in the overies tbh

Post 3: I'd hit it!

Post 4: quotes of the two posts above

Maybe GD isn't the right place for banter about literature and the arts.. I think a new subforum would be great :)

Err nearly all the book threads in here, are good with people sujesting good books etc etc, if you have a sub forum you will lose a lot of that as you will have far less people and therefore a less varied reading list, because a lot of people wouldn't bother to read it.

Less sub-forums the better. OCUK is fine as it is, one of the reasons I like it here is because its simple and not too cluttered. I could never regularly post on AVF because the sheer amount of sub forums does my nut in.

I think an Arts and Literature section would be a great idea. I can't see the idea of book threads in GD being stickied working really, and confining different books etc to a single thread would make it really disjointed and difficult to follow.

Personally I'd love to see a Money/Finance forum of some description, discussing housing market/advice, the economy, advice on banking, loans, credit cards etc, 'heads-up' on special offers....

Obviously that kind of thing has fully-fledged dedicated forums elsewhere (e.g. MSE amongst others), but it would be nice to be able to drop in there at OcUK of an evening rather than having to trawl or miss out on stuff.

As for literature, I think they might sit well in a slightly broader forum to include other forms of media i.e. film and TV.

How about a spam sub forum where the crap from GD gets dumped and filtered with a 0 post increment as with the test forum.

Actually, now I've typed that, forget it. A waste of moderating resources, just delete/lock the threads instead :p

Hey guys,

Just out of interest, who on here would think a Books and Literature section within the life section of the forum would be good?

I am an avid reader and would like to talk more about books and such with other readers on this forum (and I know you guys are on here!).

Anyone else think this would be a good sub-forum, or not?

Rich

Who reads books?

GAY!

:p

I also think this would be a good sub-section!

You should see this as a bonus to the quality of posters/threads now on the forums.

The whole idea of bringing OcUK's stature up from regular forums will show the big difference between them and OcUK, an Arts & Lit will certainly be different from the rest!. To create a level of **posh'ness** ahem :p

:)

Gilly is an admin, I don't think poshness is the top of his agenda! :p

id love to see a arts/literature forum, i did do a thread asking the same thing but i think the mod team said there wasnt enough interest. the sticky thread thing is a good idea to see if it could warrant one happening.

I do kind of agree that there shouldn't be any/many more sub forums at least at the moment. Whilst the book and cooking, (especially the latter), threads are normally enjoyable reads I'm not sure that there is enough of them to justify a whole new sub-forum with the additional moderation overhead that would entail.

Also, from experience in the Anime thread in the Movies and TV forum, having it all in one thread does discourage you from looking back through especially if you have discussions going on in the same thread. Maybe it should be suggested that if you want to create a certain type of thread then your thread title should contain certain key words to aid in people searching for them, (like "Cooking with").

One thing I do think should be implemented, if possible, is for the moderation team to be able to take away a users ability to create a new thread but not their ability to contribute to existing ones. Hence if they are being stupid then they cannot create the stupid spam threads we keep seeing but they can continue to contribute properly if they choose ... of course if they continue to abuse the forum then suspension and ban-hammer should come into play as per now.
