Question of curiosity about OC and psu

I just bought a corsair rmx 650 on the Black Friday sale for £50 and so far I recommend it all the way can't even hear it when I'm gaming. I upgraded from a 550w xigmatek psu which I've had for 3+ years!

Anyway my i5 3570k was overclocked at 4.0 but anything over that would cause the OC to crash during gaming!

Now with the new psu in I've tried 4.2 which I could never get and seems to running fine with no crashes! What I'm wondering is can the psu have a positive effect on over clocking because it's always held me back from getting the most out of the chip not being able to go over 4.0.

Just because your Xigmatek had 550w on the sticker doesn't mean it can actually deliver that on the 12v rail where it's needed. The majority of their psu's are pretty poor too. What model was it?

You now have a decent quality psu that is able to deliver clean, stable power across it's rails so yes, the psu can make a difference.

Because current and voltage are proportional the quality of the PSU and ability to provide high current is important to OC's.

When a cheap or under-powered PSU is used the voltage can drop out of spec causing the PC to crash. This occurs when the PC demands current that the PSU cannot comfortably provide.

Basic Ohms law ( I = V/R )

Yea I educated myself extensively on psu's a few months back and when I bought the older one I had no clue just picked it up from the local pc shop. It was a tauro I believe it did the job other than the over clock but I've heard a lot of good things about my corsair psu so I think I'm going to have better results :)
